From cnn

If this isn't getting out of hand, I don't know what is. This isn't some stupid movie that just uses sex and violence as its main selling point, it's a look at one of the greatest days in american history. If anyone should be offended, it's the British and Canadians who also were present on DDay but weren't shown at all in the movie.

Indecency is in the eye of the beholder so there are a lot of filthy eyes in America and they are tired of light waves passing through them and stirring up that filth.

I for one think they should air it everywhere on every Veteran's and Memorial Day.

I think a huge problem is in this country is that people (especially younger people) think that war is a game of Halo or something like that. They have a very disjointed view of what it takes to fight a war.

Indeed. I freaked when people got upset over that nipple slip Janet Jackson made, that's just insane. Especially when the soccer moms don't bloody care about the many deaths in Iraq, because it's for freedom.
People should be subjected to it more.

Don't be ridiculous. The Germans and Japanese had WMD and used them on a preemptive attack on us. FDR lied neither to the people or congress and created no fear of a false threat and attacked the right enemy as a response. Totally different scenario. FDR was a great president and right and Bush is a disaster and wrong. You should be able to see something so obvious as that.

Sigh...

The affiliates decided not to carry the program because the FCC and some of the public might frown upon it. They have misplaced their spines.

Everyone is becoming so afraid of doing something that might garner the slightest bit of negative attention that we will soon be relegated to only being able to watch reruns of "Little House on the Prairie" on the broadcast networks.

Is this the same FDR that tried to overthrow the Supreme Court and imprisoned Japanese Americans?

They are not the only ones who declined to show it. Even though it is their choice, it sets a bad precedent IMO.

Oh, I know they're not the only one but they are the largest. And, considering they had no problem showing a biased, lie-filled film and passing it off as "news" and considering they censored Ted Koppel's reading of the names of the soldiers killed in action, Sinclair sure it setting itself up to be the foe of truth.

I doubt this has to do with the language and violence, just the message of the movie itself.

As Darkhawk28 already mentioned, the political environment is just a convinient excuse not to run the movie.

I disagree. I think they should mix it up with Tora!(3), Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Glory, Schindler's List, and Dr. Strangelove.

Their main concern seems to be that it is the uncut version which uses the word 'fuck' 47 times.

Although as mentioned they have aired this version twice previously without receiving complaints or being fined.

You are nothing more than a partisan idiot, blind to all realities of history except to the love of a party that will never love you. NEVER has our country faced a greater and more real threat than we faced in WWII, and never was the actions that our country took more justified. It was literally kill or be killed. Nothing like today.

The movie, while fictionalized and dramatized, is in fact based on a true story.

The real Private Ryan was Sgt. Fritz Niland of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. His 3 brothers had all been killed on (and one during the week of) D-Day. One in the 82nd Airborne who received the Silver Star posthumously, one in the 4th infantry while storming Omaha Beach, and one who was an Army Air Corps pilot in SE Asia whose plane was shot down. Fritz was the sole surviving son, so he was quickly evac'ed home (without the drama of having to find him that is in the movie).

The full story (only a couple of paragraphs) can be found in the "Band of Brothers" book by Stephen Ambrose (but not in the HBO series), which is obviously where Spielberg and Hanks got the idea from.

I'm curious what "message of the movie" you are referring to? That war is bloody hell? Well duh. I am convinced that the next all-out global war, like WWII, will be humanity's last. As Einstein said, "I do not know what weapons will be used to fight WWIII, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones."
