Has George Takei become a charicature of himself?

I don't really have any great love or hate for Takei. Based solely on his involvement with TOS he's a television icon and I'm sure he's done other notable work as well although I would be hard pressed to think of anything off hand.

I don't know how the 'oh my' line got to be his catch phrase and I don't really care. It was sort of funny the first 15 thousand times I heard it but he seems to just keeping camping it up to the point where it just isn't tolerable any more.

If you seen his commercial for Taco Bell's quishalupa you'll know what I mean. If not, brace yourself.

yea me too, i met him at comic con, i got there early and there was no line to get his autograph so we talked for a bit. interesting guy.

i follow him on facebook and holy shit his assistants who post for him go shit crazy with postings.

I voted "don't care" because...why? If the dude can make bank like this in retirement playing off of his own image, in whatever way, then good for him. On top of that he does good work for a lot of people.

I think he has been saying it for years but it came to prominence on the Howard Stern show. He is guest announcer and sits in studio for a few days each year and they've been playing clips of him saying that for many years.

The only thing that bothers me about him are his followers. Some of those people really need to step back and realize he doesn't know or care about them. You see them in his FB posts, they call him "Uncle George" and make all these posts that really cross the line of creepy. It's like those parodies of Star Trek fans only in this case they're real.

Otherwise he's pretty pointless to me. He's milking those creepy fans for all their worth. That Kickstarter he did made him a lot of money and his FB is full of click bait article that I'm sure he's getting a good chuck of change from. At least he was able to do something that wasn't Star Trek related... though it is a bit funny that when he's trying to promote something he'll make click bait stuff about how he has 'new' things to tell people about how crappy Shatner is. He definitelyknows how to grift money from people via FB better than anyone I've seen.

He's the perfect intersection between transparent, genuine, classy and savvy to become a brand goldmine. It's a talent. There are very few folks with that particular talent, and fewer folks who have that talent crossed with acting/Hollywood promotion talent so that they started a tv celebrity and ended up an internet celebrity. (Hi Betty White!)

I don't have any particular passion for him but I respect someone that can represent their real self on the internet with such taste, restraint and humor, as well as leveraging personal taste into a reliable content farm. It's no wonder to me that that rarity appeals to a large portion of the population.
