Went to PizzaHut tonight. I bet it's the first time in 15 years. I got the $10 meal deal(a square pizza, breadsticks, and cinnamon sticks). It's alright. I kind of wanted the old thin crust pizza, but I didn't see it. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. I'll go back some time, but I'm in no hurry.

For a town in the south that doesn't have any options other than the main chains, Papa John's is fine. Everyone back home swears by them as being the best, but they don't know no better. Since moving to a place where pizza joints have replaced churches on every corner, Papa John's doesn't cut it. So it depends on your options. The best pizza in town might be Papa Johns, but it's only $5-10 for a whole pizza. A good pizza up here starts at $20-25. Guess that's why they sell them by the slice. Can't do that with $5 pizza.

Last few times I tried Pizza hut, the thing was so greasy from the crust, it wasn't funny.
The cardboard was soaked.
That's how pan pizza is suposed to be, right?

Anyway, they're doing half-off pizzas if you order online until the 9th. So at the moment you're still likely to get more than you paid for.

Pizza hut beats out Papa John, Dominos and Little C but it's a low par. They're currently offering 50% off online orders this week though so they're killing it in terms of value, relatively speaking of course.

They do offer a thin crust. I know they do because that is what we usually order. You didn't miss out on anything though. Their thin crust is just as generic as the rest of their pizzas just not as greasy.

IMO Pizza Hut is fine for what it is. Cheap, easy, and affordable. I love threads like this though especially when guys come in and tout the awesomeness of NY, Chicago, or "your local joint" pizzas.

One change I think PH has made in the last 3 years is that the crust itself isn't as greasy as it once was. Even the napkin I kept my piece on would get super wet from it all in the past, but they've since scaled it back. That's a good thing or a bad depending on how much you love grease. For me I prefer less. Then again, I blot out most of the grease on top with a napkin so I'm strange like that.

No?
I have had other "pan pizzas" and none of them were that greasy.
Dunno what they are using, lard or what, but, whatever it is, it shouldn't soak through the crust.

Haven't had them for probably 15 plus years. Never really liked them as a kid, so when I get pizza I usually go for quality stuff like Papa Johns or Dominos, the latter of which themselves upped their game a few years back and their hand-tossed pizza tastes pretty darned good.

Has Pizza Hut improved their pizzas, or is it the same as it was in the 80s/90s?

Thanks.

imo they actually used to be pretty good, then got bad in the 2000's, and now they're remixing things (like the flavor swirl options on top of their pizzas)...but they are still greasy. I do like the style of the thick pan pizza (but not heavy Chicago-style deep-dish); this is one of my family's favorite pizza recipes, which is basically a clone of Pizza Hut pan pizza:

I actually liked Dominos before their big change...now their pizzas give me heartburn every time, screw that! Personally don't care for Papa John's, way too much sauce. Little Caeser's is still decent for five bucks but man you feel that grease haha.

It's weird seeing people say that Pizza Hut is better than Domino's or Papa John's. I'll eat Pizza Hut for half price, and that's where it ends. Mind you, I won't pay full price for Papa John's either, and I haven't actually had Domino's for six years, I think. I may give it a slight edge over Little Caesar's.

Probably the guy working there sprayed too much Gold n' Sweet on it (I've seen them do this). Aerosol can of oil they spray on top of the pizzas.

Also - I quoted the OP because of the absurd indication that Papa Johns and Domino's produce quality pizza. No offense OP - but you really need to find yourself a good brick oven joint and taste what quality pizza is really like. Or pretty much any pizza joint in NYC, Chicago, or Boston. World of difference.

I grew up on chain pizzas & didn't know any better, pretty much until after college. Never really went to mom & pop pizza shops because pizza = logos. Little Caesers if I needed cheap, Pizza Hut or Dominos if I needed decent. Then I discovered high-quality pizza joints (if any of you are ever in CT, PM me for recommendations!) & then I got into making pizza myself more recently. I finally invested in a proper outdoor pizza oven last year & couldn't be happier. I still get pizza out from time to time, but it's so easy to throw together pies at home & do a huge variety of flavors that I mostly just do it at home. Unless I'm going some place awesome like Pepe's in New Haven

They use thick round metal pans at Pizza Hut & fill the bottom with oil using large jugs with a squirt top. That's why they're so oily...the dough proofs in a small lake of oil. It makes the pizza greasy, but also contributes to the flavor (and texture).

I don't know how you guys eat the dish ones. It's like eating pure oil. Hand tossed is the way to go.

You gotta eat the good shit. When you're in NYC, go to Prince St and get one of these bad boys.

My local Pizza Hut is garbage, but the one by grammas house is excellent. There is clearly a difference in quality of ingredients and some owners decide to spend a little more for better raw materials.

How does this even make sense from a franchise perspective? Don't they all get the same raw ingredients from HQ?

I doubt it.
At the very least their dairy products are probably not shipped across the country.

Why would they need to ship it across the country? As a domestic franchisee why wouldn't they have local distribution centers like every other franchiser?

or a weekly sysco truck.

No, thats really not strange. I do that if there is way too much grease.
