Has the word "dude" become a figure of speach?

I was standing in line for :beer: at a baseball game last night and overheard bits of a conversation between a group of girls. They were maybe around 20-ish in age. I wasn't intentionally listening in on their conversation but I keep hearing, dude this and dude that which just doesn't sound right.

Has this become a figure of speech like the word "guys" which is now used for a group of men or women?

Part of the problem, I think, comes from the fact that in English there's no gender-neutral pronoun that refers to a person. Ever heard someone referred to third-hand as "they"?

LOL...everytime my son says to me "Dude,..." I correct him and say, "I'm a Dudette, not a Dude..."

Actually just prefer Mom though.. heh heh heh
