I thought jag was ford but was recently sold. Their reliability shot way up during their ownership by ford too. Their quality on the 2010 rankings will have far more to do with how Ford changed them than whoever owns them now.

Explain this, how has Toyota had more reported issues for unintended acceleration issues than all other brands in the US than all other brands combined for the last decade, long before your whole theory could have started.

Toyota has made boring cars for a while. They were reliable, but boring. Once they tried to move to significantly higher volume they dropped the ball. Their cars aren't as good comparatively as they used to be and they are still boring. Their cars are getting less attractive compared to the other things out there.

Toyota got too big. They got huge and had to cut quality just like the big American companies had to do as well. Their cars are no where near as good as they were say 10yrs ago because they expanded so much.

Wait so Toyotas are made in the US? I always figured they were made in Japan. I know they are tested here in Canada (and probably other places too) though. There is a cold weather testing plant in my city, it's actually somewhat top secret and I know where it is since I had to go setup some meteorology equipment there.

Ford fixed (I think by getting rid of Lucas electronics) Jag and sold it to Tata.

One of the issues with the surveys are they are not only measuring the reliability of the car, but also how well the owner treats it. Certain models will attract types of people that may be harder on their cars while other models attract people that will take better care of them. A good example is Toyota's Scion brand. A Tc driver will tend to be younger and harder on the car than your average Camry driver. In general, with much of Toyota's lineup being boring the type of person they attract tend to be older, drive more conservatively (let's face it, if they actually enjoyed driving their car hard they wouldn't be driving a Camry or Corolla) and I would even bet that they are more conscientious about maintenance (your average old person seems more likely to keep up on it than your average 20 something guy). Surveys don't seperate the car from the driver so their actual value is limited.

My opinion of Toyota changed when I was looking for my last car. I wanted an econo-box for my daily commute (21 miles each way). I test drove the Yaris and Corolla. In both cases, the cars were rattling, rough feeling, and the ergonomics sucked. I also test drove the Honda Fit and Civic. Toyota was hopelessly outclassed by Honda for cars within the same price range. I ended up buying a Fit. For reference, I've owned two Toyotas, a pickup that I sold at 280k miles and an FJ Cruiser that I still own and like very much. The only quality problem I have experienced with the FJ at 43k miles was a busted A/C switch that was replaced under warranty.

As far as folks hating on American car companies, it depends on which company and which model. A Ford is not a GM is not a Chrysler. And a truck is not a sedan. My current work truck is a Silverado 2500HD with 53k miles. I drive it on some really crappy dirt/rock off-road routes on routine basis and it has not has a single thing break or fail, not one thing. My coworkers with Jeeps and Dodges have not fared as well. One coworker had the gas peddle off off her 2009 Jeep. Just fell off.

I don't expect them to make flawless cars, but it does kind of concern me that they waited so long to recall cars that they knew were killing people because of a design flaw.
