I plan to do a haswell build very soon but I was wondering do I actually need a haswell certified psu for a haswell cpu? Or would my current psu work? I currently use a seasonic m12 I think.
How old is your current PS?
Has it lived it's life behind an AVR-type UPS?
If it's more than 2 or 3 years old, I'd opt for a fresh PS (Seasonic is good), UNLESS your current PS has been running protected behind a good quality UPS.
The haswell certification has something to do with the c states, some psu's detect too little poweruse on certain voltages and turn themselves off.
You can always disable those deepest c states in the bios, but they're probably not even going to be a problem, especially if there's also other hardware in the system. I'd just try it.
Like Flapdrol said, it has to do with certain CPU c-states. Your PSU will work just fine with Haswell. I used an old OCZ ModXStream Pro that I initially built for Lynnfield, and transferred to my Haswell system. I since upgraded to a Seasonic 80+ Platinum 760W, since the OCZ was almost 6 years old. The Seasonic PSU is fully modular (love that), 80+ Platinum, 7 year warranty, and Haswell certified. It was on sale for $99, couldn't pass it up.
