Reading that thread at OCN with the 5960X at 4.5ghz and 1.3V he saw 90C under load using a AIO water cooling system.

I'd guess at least 250W with 1.3V, maybe more, and you need to use custom water cooling for reasonable temperatures. I'm good with it, just glad to know there is a real possibility high clock rates are feasible with ample cooling.

I did just fine with an Nh-D14 with 3 fans on SB-E @4.7. That probably will pull close to Haswell-E power at maybe 4.4 or 4.5. I could definitely live with that....I guess the density of the cores could be an issue, but I haven't seen how the layout looks yet to see if that is helpful/hindrance.

If you look at the Overclocker.net OP from here:
Over at the Overclock site their is a user with an ES 5960X that on a beta bios and mobo got 4.3GHz and 4.5GHz out of it, so lots of potential by the sounds of it.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1506847/intel-5960x-haswell-e-8-core-quick-observations

You can see this user's computer configs - and he has fairly heavy duty custom H2O configs in use. So, 4.5 GHz using air or AIO might be insufficient. Still, I'm happy to the octocore is able to hit 4.5 GHz, that's more than I expected. Hopefully the hexacore's will hit 4.7-4.8 GHz consistently with a good cooling loop (or higher - of course).

He updated the thread with some 5820K results, looking good

Thanks for the positive comments from everyone!

I had to go out of town for business at the last minute on Monday...so that delayed my testing. Before I left I was able to run a quick overclock on the 5820k. I did not take any screen shots..

I was able to get the 5820k up to 4.5ghz at 1.25v....

I plan on doing some more testing this weekend with the H100i, but am also going to hook up a quad radiator, D5 pump, and Swiftech block and see if there is any more headroom on the 5960x...I will post screenshots of the 5820k results too..

.....and to fuel the debate on DDR4 memory.....here is a quick comparison of DDR3 on X79 and DDR4 on X99...Interesting...again take these with a grain of salt....

X79 DDR3-1866 Cas 9 Passmark memory bench = 3355
X99 DDR4-2666 Cas15 Passmark memory bench = 3028

Each with 4x4gb sticks

I sure hope mature MB bioses are waiting in the wings....

Only 7 days before launch!!

Looks like the entire lineup from 5820K to 5960X could very well give good overclock results. Finger ready to pull the trigger on RVE and 5960X!

nice find.

Looks to me like the memory speed and cas latency is whats killing those scores.

Need to see faster DDR4 sticks with better latency which will come down the road.

I don't see 4x8GB DDR4 3000 kits available. Anyone know if they are being sold yet?

Been thinking about this for a while.

I can see the purpose of 8-core Xeons. But why would anyone get the 5960X? Things like image rendering can utilize network rendering so it would be cheaper to get 2 quad-core i7 machines instead (which can be clocked higher).

Maybe this is a dumb question . . . but can Haswell-E also use DDR3, or is it exclusively DDR4? The CPUs look worth getting but the current DDR4 memory not so much.

Seems like every time a new memory standard comes out, it is slightly slower than the old one for a while until they sort things out and ramp up the speeds.

Exclusively DDR4.

DDR4 is not costing that much more, unless you buy some silly modules.

But is DDR4 an appreciable speed-up at these frequencies with such high latency? I suppose Haswell-E does have quad channel memory.

GSkill just dropped there DDR4 lineup info

http://images.anandtech.com/doci/8416/image004_575px.jpg

No 64gb kits above DDR4-2800

from anandtech:

"The product line that G.Skill is aiming to release at launch is quite impressive with all the 1.2 volt modules in 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB kits. Due to the extra binning and higher tolerances of the more performance oriented kits, the DDR4-3000 C15 will be in 16GB or 32GB kits, DDR4-3000 C16 will be in a kit 32GB and the top line 3200 MHz C16 will be in a 16GB kit only."

I'll wait for DD4 3000 CAS 10 before I make the jump to that platform. Seems silly to move to lower memory performance from current DDR3.

Historically does anyone know/remember if Newegg does combo deals on new CPU & Mobo's during launch day? I'm partial to Newegg but, I see that Amazon has the Haswell-E CPU's on pre-order and may go that route. I'm ready to spend but, prefer not overspend

Good luck with the wait. I doubt there will ever be DDR4 3000 at CAS 10.

I hope the hexacore's clock higher with a bit more tweaking. But, if the octo-cores are binned and the hexacores are just octocore rejects, the hexacores may not consistently clock better till yields improve (so, probably sometime next year).

If they are rejects due to a faulty core or 2 or even cache. Then its no limit on how the other clock.

Is it worth upgrading from a SB-E 6 core w/ 12 threads to Haswell-E? Performance numbers are about the same no?

Does HW-E socket need new mounting mechanism for coolers? If so, I hope that Noctua will release one for NH-D14.
