Haswell, not dead yet!

Well, not entirely, anyways. Skylake is nice, Kaby Lake is a shade better, but I've been using a 4.0Ghz G3258 rig I built for a budget PC the last few days for "testing", and it's... Not bad at all, for web browsing.

One semi-major drawback, though, is the limited iGPU resolution on the G3258. Like Skylake and Kaby Lake, Haswell supports HDMI 1.4(b?). Unlike those former two, Haswell Pentiums (anything lower than i3), is LIMITED to 1920x1080 (1080P) res on the HDMI output from the iGPU. You apparently (according to ARK) have to step up to the Haswell i3 CPUs to be able to do 4K30 out of the native HDMI 1.4 port with the iGPU.

Well doesn't that suck!

Comparing CPU-Z benchmarks, between the G4560, G4600, and G3258 @ 4.0, the G3258 @ 4.0 edges out the other two very slightly in ST, at 1793, and trails in MT due to lack of HT, at 3496.

Overall, though, very similar to the Kaby Lake CPUs that are locked and not overclockable, but have HyperThreading, when the G3258 is at 4.0Ghz (or above).

But, even though the CPU-Z benchmarks are similar, just the presence of HyperThreading, seems to make a fairly big difference for AAA gaming, with the G3258 (at any speed?) being a stutter-fest on some games.

Couple that with the availability of decent (new) H81 overclocking mobos drying up quite a bit lately, it makes Haswell a less-desirable proposition.

Edit: CPU-Z benchmark for my G4600, is ST: 1766, MT: 4077. So clearly, there is more MT power in the G4600 than the G3258 @ 4.0, but ST is close to the same. So G4600 should be better for games. But for desktop web browsing, they are very similar.

I would still get an G4520 or G4600 before I'll get a Haswell G3258. Unless you are getting the parts really cheap there is no point in buying older parts to build with.

I'm sure people running i7 4790K, 5820K, 5930K and 5960K with decent cooling won't be needing to upgrade any time soon.

Ivy Bridge people will probably be fine until AVX extensions in applications become mainstream.

I plan to ride my 5960x all the way to 2020 or the debut of the X399 platform probably.

If things really don't change a whole lot, maybe even 2022 or x499.

From a purely gaming perspective anyone owning a 4770k or 4790k won't gain much if anything, upgrading to a Broadwell, Skylake or Kabylake cpu.

Doesn't it suck!

Depends on your point of view. I sort of like it because my system last longer, which more money for video cards and storage.

Sandy Bridge isn't dead either... hell I'm sure web browsing is perfectly fine on a Wolfdale. For the average user CPU's have been maxed out for nearly a decade.

yes I would think an E8600 at 4GHz would still feel quick for web browsing (paired with an SSD and enough ram)
Skylake is not massively faster than Haswell, and 4GHz is a high clock... not sure what he expected.

My 4770k is still the best $200 I ever spent. I want to build a Ryzen rig but I've got no reason to for a while.

I personally don't mind that CPU progress has stalled. Don't really miss the days where an expensive PC was "old" after 2 years, and an obsolete POS after 4 four.

Anybody with a Haswell quad-core doesn't need to replace it with Kaby Lake. Upgrade the GPU, add more storage, or etc.

I don't think this is a shock to anyone really. Even Sandy Bridge owners are still fine.

Add higher-clocked 4770Ks to the list

Haswell is fine, but I think its Pentiums are the most obsolete parts by far. Kaby Lake hyperthreaded Pentiums are way better. 2C/2T really is not enough anymore, not for anything beyond web browsing or PS360 era gaming.

I was going to say the same thing, but it's VirtualLarry. I half expected him to be praising how useful an AMD Duron is.

The new HT Pentiums are only useful to those who can't afford a quad-core CPU or who only need a very basic system. Of course Larry may be catering to both groups of folks.

But still...

Yes, the G4560 and G4600 are towards the lower-end of the spectrum, but for gaming, outside of a few specific CPU-heavy titles (RTS), the G4560 is entirely adequate for 60FPS 1080P gaming, with a suitable non-bottlenecked GPU (GTX1060 or RX 470). (See the DigitalFoundry and HardwareUnboxed YouTube videos.)

Of course, I just sold a G4560 / 16GB / 240GB / Z170 rig to a friend, because he was talking about gaming.

Now, he tells me today, that he intends to do streaming. I was like, "You didn't tell me that before! You're gonna need more cores for streaming! Unless, you can get ShadowPlay to work out for you..."

Speaking of which, how well does ShadowPlay work on a GTX950?

I've an unboxed MSI B250 mITX Mobo + Pentium G4560 and I'm thinking about returning them to Amazon, to focus on Ryzen.....

Given that the CPU+Mobo Combo came in about $170, should I skip this and get a Ryzen CPU/Mobo for about $225/$230? I've an RX480 and I initially thought about sticking to the LGA 1151 path, but Ryzen (especially the 4 core/4 thread unlocked 1200X) looks great at $149 MSRP.... but they wont come out until April or so. So maybe I wait for the next 2 months? I am slightly unsure.

Do you believe LGA 1151 will get a good quad core CPU in the $135-$150 ? (Price Drops for Kaby lake or the upcoming Coffee Lake 14nm Desktop CPUs)

Thanks for any inputs/insights!

Regards,
Vishnu

I'm in your boat. Paid $250 for my 4790K. I really want a Ryzen rig, but, like you, I have absolutely no need except just to do it.

I was in that boat with my 4770k system, but I wanted more cores and more PCI-e lanes.

I still have my 4770k system but my x99 5960x has enough features to keep me going with two NVM-e drives for at least a few more years. I'm hoping nothing extremely tantalizing comes out before 2022 or so.
