I was in that boat with my 4770k system, but I wanted more cores and more PCI-e lanes.

I still have my 4770k system but my x99 5960x has enough features to keep me going with two NVM-e drives for at least a few more years. I'm hoping nothing extremely tantalizing comes out before 2022 or so.

For my main rig, the 4790K is everything I need. My next project will be to upgrade my home server. I'm leaning towards a dual core Xeon server and a crapload of memory and storage. That won't be for at least another six months. Major money. I figure I may upgrade my main rig in 2-3 years. Probably go with a 8 core/16 thread Ryzen monster. Just have no need at the present time.

Even if Ryzen is good, I'll stick with my 6800k build for a while. Maybe I'll snag a used 6850k or something if I can.

Anyone know if Ryzen will have 10 core variants?

Speaking of which, how well does ShadowPlay work on a GTX950?
Shadowplay is awesome for recording gameplay videos but for streaming it uses too much bitrate for most platforms if you want a decent quality.
As long as he sticks to streaming games that amd approves for ryzen cpu streaming though he will be fine.

Still undecided if I want to sell my 4790K system and upgrade to a 1800x. (or 1700x depending on overclocking potential). I would like to support AMD, they deserve massive kudos if their new cpu is as good as the hype says.

The plan is to run my 5820k until 2020 and re-evaluate then. Ryzen 2 maybe?

I want to triple threat upgrade again. More cores, more IPC, and higher clockrate. It's the most satisfying way to upgrade. I'm worried by 2020 Intel will still keep 8C/16T chips on the more expensive socket/chipset. When I bought my 5820k, it was cheaper at Microcenter than the 4790k and both are Haswell (before Skylake launched) so it was a no brainer (well, I would have gotten a higher clockrate OC with the 4790). Now you have to sacrifice IPC to get more cores from Intel.

Hopefully Ryzen will reawaken Intel, and by 2020 we will have several affordable 8C/16T chips from both AMD and Intel that will be significantly faster than Haswell.

Those were under $300 for a while, weren't they? Haswell, six-core, HEDT, for "cheap", what's not to like. Those were a good deal.

Well, at the time where I made the decision on which direction to go, 4790K or 5820K, the premium for what I wanted to do was a lot more for the 5820K. Granted, I could have done with less, but I wouldn't do it unless I could go all the way. At the time, DDR4 cost was through the roof and a comparable mobo to the workstation model I got was a lot more as well. I think the difference was at least $300 more. The reviews at the time had the 4790K at or near the top in a lot of tasks. I got my 4790K for $250 @ Microcenter. Seemed like a no brainer, just like when I got my i7 920 for $200 some 5 1/2 years earlier.

Yes, it was $299. The 4790k was significantly more, though I forget how much at the time. DDR4 cost more at the time true, but total CPU+RAM+MOBO cost for both was about the same, so I opted for 50% more cores over a few hundred MHz (after both OC).

I'm hanging on to my 4790K and 1231-V3 for a while yet. They are plenty fast for whatever I throw at them. I will wait for the rush to calm down and get an idea of what Intel is going to do.

I'm quite curious about the new Intel socket.

Then I can make a better decision and finally move to DDR4.

I should also have a clearer video card road map by then as well.

I personally don't mind that CPU progress has stalled. Don't really miss the days where an expensive PC was "old" after 2 years, and an obsolete POS after 4 four.

No kidding. I'm still chugging along just fine on my i3-530 with no signs of requiring an upgrade anytime soon. I think only my core (non 2) duo laptop outlasted it in terms of usefulness, and I'd still be using it today if the screen hinge didn't break on year 10 of ownership.

I also have a laptop with a 6th gen dual core now to replace my old one but it doesn't feel any faster than my i3-530 desktop.

I'm tempted by a R7-1700 OCed to ~4.2GHz or so (if possible), but it would probably only about match my dual X5690 rig in encoding performance, so I'll wait and see.
The itch to play with new hardware on launch day is a little hard to resist though
Last time I had fun was with the 4770K launch.

Come join the dark side, we can have a mini-AT nerd party at (the Dallas) MC on launch day

It's only money, what's a few packets of ramen for a few months anyway
