Haswell Refresh, need some advice

my rig needs a refresh

Currently I have:

Q6600 (@3.2) + Zalmann 9700
Asus Maximus Formula
2x2gb DDR2 800
MSI Twin Frozer 6950 2GB
Intel 320 160GB
WD Black 1TB
Corsair AX750
a 10 years old Thermaltake fulltower case (I don't know the model XD )


New rig:

i7 4770 (non K version) + Corsair H100i
Asus Q87M-E/CSM or Asrock Q87M vPro
2x8GB DDR3 1600 1.5v
MSI Twin Frozer 6950 2GB
Intel 320 160GB
WD Black 1TB
Corsair AX750
Fractal Define R4


PC will be used for pretty much everything with a focus on games.
I need the non K version for vPro/vt-d and a Q87 chipset for the same reasons.
I don't plan on OC (obviously is a non K ) but i think that a couple of hundreds mhz is possible:

If OC is not possible with non K version or these MBs (but from the manuals there are plenty of settings for OC) , undervolt would be nice for lower temperatures.


I don't know yet which MB is best, ideas?
Any suggestion on RAM will be appreciated (possibly sticks with no heatsinks or low profile, this guy says that there is little room for tall ram

but maybe is because he use a mITX MB, mine would be a mATX )

My idea is to put the H100i in the front as an intake, as exhaust a single 140mm (R4 default) with the option (if temps are bad) to add another 140mm on the side as exhaust.

Noctua nh-d14 performs about the same but a little quieter, but i don't want 1240g on my motherboard

custom built liquid cooler are out of the picture (too much money/effort plus there are big chances I'll screw up something )


there are other reason not to go with h100i? and the other components?

What's the specific reason that you need vPro and VT-d? Also, I agree with sm625, you're not going to be able to overclock with that config, so there's no reason to get a massive HSF or CLC.

I know that, but my questions are about which motherboard is better (asus, asrock or others) and which ram should i get.

If the H100i is not a good cooler i can change it with another CLC :biggrin:

Get a Hyper 212 Plus if you really need a cooler. The only reason to get one while not overclocking is to reduce noise. CPUs are tanks and last a long time.

Agree 100%. An Arctic Cooler i30 would be fine as well if you can find it.
