Well, I had win98SE on my system for about 8months. Never had any really big problems except the usual lag when you install about 5000 programs on it.....then ME came out. I have to say I can never resist when a new os comes out.

Well, it has been a disaster. I updated all the drivers for the mobo, video...yada yada yada.... and all I have gotten from this os is TROUBLE!!!!

The thing locks up after going into sleep mode... the screen does wierd things and locks a few minutes after being woken up......

I just cant figure out why I have so many problems after the system goes into suspend. It is really aggrivating.

If you upgraded from 98 using ME that is your problem. There are problems which are addressed in other threads when upgrading 98 with ME. The only way right now is to do a clean install.
Your best bet is to try to uninstall ME and save what you have unless you're willing to format and re install 5000 things......whew!!! I thought I had a lot in my hard drive!

Here's another example of why it's a good idea to partition a hard drive. Reserve about 2GB for a "C" partition and put your OS on it. Install all your data, programs, MP3's, etc. on other partitions. Then, when a situation arises you can format "C" and install a new OS without wiping out all your data.

The only "flaw" I see with Dan's suggestion is that you'll have to reinstall programs anyway to properly restore registry settings. (Ghost is an excellent alternative here) Other than that, he's good go.

You're right about the need to re-install programs, SUO. For me at least, the amounts to 10 programs at most. (Office 2000, PhotoShop, CorelDraw, etc.) All those gigs of files and data though ... going back years. I shudder to think....

Good point about Ghost too!

I don't understand why people are having problem in upgrading to WinME. I
upgraded to WinME with no problem at all. did not have to reinstall
drivers at all. Just lucky, i guess.

Are you running a tnt2 video card? oops I guess so. I have had the same problems with win98,win98se and winme with my tnt2 I have tried every different driver revision all with the same result. I am pretty sure its the card. I am going to write dimond next to see if there is any cure.

Krofty,

Well thank god someone understands my pain. I thought I was the only one experiencing this EXTREMELY frustrating problem. And let me tell you I tried EVERYTHING in the book to fix this problem...I clean installed about three times.

I guess you know what lock-ups i am referring to.... It is really bizzare.... I mean when it come from suspend mode the screen is off-kilter to the right....I have to go into control panel and change the res size temporarily....then press cancil and the screen goes back to normal...for a few minutes and then the screen freezes up...... It just doesnt make any sense. I too have tried the diamond drivers and the det 3 drivers.... both have the same problem....

Are you getting the same problems as i am?
Have you figured out a work-around?
BTW on Diamond's website they bascially said the they are not going to make any more drivers for the TNT2....

It makes me laugh at all those who insist they should wipe out Win98 and then install Windows ME.

My experience. I had a very sick Win98 SE computer after those PacBell children so-called techs virtually destroyed that computer failing to install DSL.

Win98 SE would not boot up correctly and I always got an error message the monitor was not installed correctly and of course it was. Booting up was a horror and some times took an hour or more rebooting and trying to get it all back correctly after multiple times in SAFE mode.

Well, I installed Windows ME OVER that sick Win98 SE and the result is I now have a perfect running WinME that boots up correctly every day without a single problem. The programs that use to crash no longer crash.

My Mustek scanner just as it completed a scan the computer would crash. In effect I had no scanner.

After installing WinME over '98 SE I now have a perfect running scanner again.

I did not reinstall anything as all programs are as they were when I had Win98 SE on it.

There is zero need to reformat your hard and run FDISK on it as that is a complete waste of your time. (note those who say they have FDISKed their computer multiple times and still have problems)

This particular computer originally had Win95 on it. Then it was upgraded to Win98. Then upgraded to Win98 SE. Now it has been upgraded to WinME and that computer is running as perfectly as any computer I have owned since 1985.

With that kind of success installing ME I say thank you Microsoft for another outstanding version of Windows.

WinME was working perfect on my computer for about a month (clean install) then it just died. It would freeze on bootup 5/6 times. If I get it to boot then it was fine, but it was a pita to get it to boot at all I hadn't changed ANYTHING so there is no reason for that to happen. I think that something is seriously wrong with WinME and hopefully microsoft fixes. I use win2k as my primary os, but I still need win9x for dvds (dolby digital) so I put 98se back on. I guess some people are just lucky and Me works for them (including one of my friends)...

Well, you are better off with win2k...

Deseased,

Seems like your problems installing ME may be hardware related as no matter what you do to even using FDISK several times does not work.

I have had perfect success in upgrading from Win95, to Win98, to Win98 SE and now to Win Me.

A friend of mine has the Asus 7700 VGA card and that caused his installation of ME to go wrong. He replaced that VGA card with a Matrox G400 and that solved all of his ME installation problems. He has a perfect running upgrade from Win98 SE to Win ME now.

I also havea lot of programs installed on my computers and that includes all the upgrades. I would hate to think about having to go through all those installations and upgrades again from scratch with a clean installation.

Wiz,

In ME use Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

In that menu you can select to go back to the last day WinME had booted up and ran correctly. Like magic you have once again a perfect running ME.

Easy stuph.

No need to waste your time using FDISK and another complete new installation.

I have been using an Upgrade ME from Win98SE from day one without any problems, I did not have to fuss with anything installing.
My system isn't plain jane either, P3B-F, P3 700 @ 933 Mhz, 256 Meg Micron -7e, Modded fasttack raid 0 w/2 IBM GXP 15 gig drives, V3 3000.
