Haunted machine??

So what would cause a computer to all of a sudden quit recognizing one of the optical drives & the replacement for the same optical drive it wouldn't recognize?
Cables & ports have been switched around, master/slave settings have been verified as well.
Also, after shutting down, the cpu fan & case fan continue to run. The machine won't power on, but those fans run.
The machine is several years old...a 2.6 Intel IIRC...built for a friend.
Haunted?
Weakening PSU?
Screwy motherboard?

Sounds like the mobo's going bad to me. It maybe going bad due to the power supply but that is by no means for certain.

Sounds like a bad mobo..I would check the Caps on the mobo for buldging and such..

Also you might want to try to hook a different PSU up to the mobo..

btw-- what brand PSU are you currently using?

IIRC, the PSU came with the case, which was a Fong Kai. So whatever Fong Kai used in their cases is what's inside. I'm pretty sure it's a 300W version.

Based on the limited documentation, that PSU looks pretty cheap (commonly a problem with PSUs included with cases). If you can, get an older 20-pin PSU that's solid like this one:

If you cant' get a good deal on a 20-pin, you'll need a 20+4 pin w/ adapter.

Also, do check the board for problems. That is some very odd behavior.

Many new 24-pin PSU's have whats called a 20+4 pin plug that allows you to remove the 4-pin portion to fit into older motherboards but allow you to keep using them when you upgrade later.. I suggest you go for one of these.

I forgot to mention that I tried this trick on the PSU, but it didn't work.
