Not sure how long it is available at this price but it is currently going to $209.00 at Newegg and lists for $249.00.

Does anyone know if TW cable boxes block component output of HDCP protected content? What if both HDMI and component outputs are connected?

Easy way to tell would be to connect it up through component to your TV if it has component inputs and watch something you know is protected.

That's just it -- there's no indication something is protected. Short of connecting a non-HDCP-compliant monitor, how can you tell if HDCP is in effect?

The HAVA HD distribution box is on sale at Amazon (courtesy SD). It too uses component inputs to digitize HDTV, but I've seen discussion on the Monsoon forums from folks who can't get it to work with cable boxes because of HDCP. This Hauppauge HD-PVR would have the same problem.

(BTW, the HAVA down-converts the HDTV signal to 480p for distribution, IIRC, so it doesn't make for as good a HD-PVR as the Hauppauge.)

HDCP is only for DVI and HDMI AFAIK.

Component is considered an analog hole.

Correct, but apparently some cable boxes are now "plugging" the analog hole by disabling component outputs on protected content. That would limit recording by a HTPC/PRV that uses component inputs only to unprotected content.

I don't understand how they could do that. If they limit what goes out the component ports, then you couldnt even watch it on tv - if for example your hd tv only has component inputs. They cannot tell the difference between what gets watched and what gets recorded.

It may be that a setup that uses component-only ouputs will work. But some are saying (see, e.g., here) that if you connect the HDMI output of the cable box to the TV, but also try to connect the component outputs of the cable box to something else, the component signals will be blocked.

There may not be a good PC-based HD-PVR solution for cable customers until a CableCard-type PC input that actually works is available (or HDCP is cracked).

But on top of CableCard not working, you have another form of HDCP built into that to prevent recording as well.
