Hauppauge WinTV card

I am trying to convert old videos from a VCR to computer and wonder if I can get away with using a Hauppauge WinTV card for capture. I figure that I'll feed it in to Virtualdub and let my CPU handle all the compression (P4 1.7g)

Do you think the Hauppauge card can handle the 320x240 stream without dropping frames?

I have one and have no problem capturing raw, uncompressed AVI video at 320 x 240. Even my old 850 MHz Duron chip could handle capturing both uncompressed and compressed MPEG video at 320 x 240 with the WinTV card.

the card can handle anything up to 720x480 (NTSC). What resolution you can capture at is dependant on the software you use. I use WinDVR and can capture full res MPEG2, but it's highly dependant on your CPU

I have this card and use virtual dub to capture TV broadcast at 320x240 using divx codec in realtime. The cpu usage was under 35% most of the time.

Hey, do I have to have a sound card in order to record the audio too? At the moment, I only have the AC'97 onboard sound on my Epox 8KHA+ but I will be getting an Audigy soon.

Also, whats the best model of this card? I don't want to get an inferior model when I purchase one.

I believe you do cuz you have to run an audio wire from you tv card to your audio.

I was looking on eBay and this guy who had a WinTV from hauppauge told me that his card was model 38101 REV B410 but I couldn't find that on the Hauppauge product listing on their site. Is that a really old card or something?

sorry, luda, i don't know if those are the older model or not. All i could tell you is that if it is the wintv, it's a good card. The difference between the regular wintv and wintv-go is that the go is mono and doesn't have an FM tuner. hope that helps.
