Do I win anything for having ~100k of fiber optic fusion splicer / parts?
What you doing with that? Let the cable grunts mess with it.()

Very unimpressive looking :\
Big money IT doesn't have the same big money looks sadly. Same thing with my box of 1gig GBICs. At one point I had $40k of them sitting on my desk and in a box. People would ask me if they were USB sticks.
If I got close ups of the heat sinks would that be better? Yes, the optics themselves need heat sinks because of how fast they're converting light.
Now only if you had someplace to plug them in....
Optics have come down a lot in price and size!
Back in 2003-2006, I remember wondering if I needed to do something about my car insurance when I routinely hauled replacement OC-192 line cards around in the trunk. (The only images I can find are on eBay listings, so just imagine something about the size of a large dictionary).
They went for something north of $130k apiece after a hefty discount, and a single 1G ZX GBIC retailed for about $40k IIRC.
This is true, but even short haul has come down considerably. The GBICs above are going for ~$1700 apiece; I paid nearly as much for an 1GB LX not even a decade ago.Thats long haul stuff, this is short haul

Keywords, decade ago
Bet you paid more for storage and processing power a decade ago too
Actually no...we didn't have any. I'm sure somebody paid more, but we left that sort of stuff up to the connected member institutions.Bet you paid more for storage and processing power a decade ago too
