So I'm looking to upgrade my monitor.... I posted about this before but now I've decided I want 27' (or bigger) because after measuring my current is 23' widescreen. The exact monitor I have is this:

http://hothardware.com/m/Reviews/Samsung-P2350-23-LCD-Monitor/default.aspx

Not a bad monitor, good with 2ms but it'd be 60hz so that's not giving me the best refresh/pic for my current AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition videocard. A little bigger is always better.

I'm thinking about maybe this monitor...
BenQ XL2720T 27IN 120HZ Monitor LED 1080p 1MS Lightboost DVI 2XHDMI Display Port HAS 3D Vision Ready

Do you guys think this is a good buy? Can anyone suggest a better 27-30' around the ~$500 mark? Has to be good for gaming primarily (and general use).

What games do you intend on playing for FPS id would go with the 120Hz, some people say that 24" 120Hz is the best for FPS, I personally have a 30" 1600p Ips monitor, its awesome for games, since it will give you a eyegasm, but a 120Hz panel will give you an edge on FPS. Its up to you, I will tell you this even tho IPS+High Res is amazing 120Hz panels will make the game allot more fluid.

This is all a personal choice. Everyone will have their own opinion.

I went from a 24" 1080p monitor to a 27" 120hz 1080p monitor and was very happy with the size and 120hz.

A lot of people are under the impression that 120hz is only for playing competitive FPS games, but it really isn't. It makes all games feel far more responsive and smooth, especially any first person view games. Whether that is RPG's, action or FPS, they all feel more like your view is connected directly to your mouse, where at at 60hz, it feels disconnected, or sluggish.

It is a personal choice. Everyone is different, but for many, 120hz does offer a smoother more connected experience. For others, IPS and higher resolutions offer more eye candy.

I personally get sick at less than 80 FPS on a 120hz monitor, so it is an obvious choice. I'd pick the BenQ XL2720T 27IN 120HZ Monitor over an IPS any day. I may also consider waiting a for Q1 2014 for G-sync, which will first be put on these 120/144hz monitors.

Well yes lightboost removes motion blur entirely, It gives a much more realistic feeling to a game, but from all the games, competitive online games benefice the most, due to the almost non existing input lag and a much more fluid gameplay. Personaly if I get a 290x this xmas I might sell my 1600p and go for the new XL27 Myself, and buy 2 smaller monitors in portrait since I need the Desktop Space.

Anyway isn't G-Sync redundant on a 120Hz Lightboost enabled monitor?

I think G-Sync is supposed improve smoothness at frame rates below standard refresh rate, and improve screen tearing even if the game runs above refresh rate all the time.

120hz may give a competitive FPS gamer an advantage, but it gives smoothness and responsive benefits to almost all gaming, especially 1st person and over the shoulder view games.

As far as G-Sync goes...
G-sync improves smoothness at any FPS rate between 30 and your refresh rate without introducing stuttering or latency, as v-sync does.

If you can maintain your refresh rate, which is pretty rare, unless playing old games, it may not help as much. One thing that you would be able to do, in order to remove the latency from v-sync on DX games, is set a FPS limit at 1 FPS below your refresh rate, and utilize G-sync. This will remove the latency issue and not introduce any stuttering.

I would go for it. 120 Hz monitors are really smooth. I've seen all of the color test and the angle tests, but after five minutes in a game I tend to find that I forget about black levels and contract ratios and only the speed matters. Most of the other 27" monitors which are commonly reviewed seem to be slower and aimed at the color accuracy crowd. I guess the ASUS VG278HE would be the one to compare it against.

Is G-sync worth waiting for?

Oh, wait, that's only for Nvidia cards tho right? I have a AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition videocard.

If you get the 144hz VG248QE you can install the G-sync module into it later on (its the only monitor I know of that will fully support installing it).

Those who have seen G-sync in person all say it's pretty incredible and some said they'd never consider using a non G-sync monitor once available.

Yah, the 7970 won't work with it.

It's to each his own. Personally, I prefer IPS. The IQ is so much better. While using a TN panel though, even though I can see the color is awful, I adapt.

Were there monitors in that video? Cool tats, though. Was I the only one distracted when she was adjusting the stand height? LOL

Just wait for 120hz 1440p IPS monitors of course! I would go for the higher res, but that's me.

Anyone own the XL2720T or ASUS VG278HE? Is the color on thee BenQ washed out?

I've read an article mentioning pixels on 27' being a lot less..... would it wiser to stick with 24'?

The VG278HE is suppose to be good but from what I hear its the VG278H model that is best. 120Hz and LightBoost is where its at right now. I would think 144Hz would be better but I haven't used either so cant rightly say.

The problem with 144hz is Lightboost is not support at that refresh rate, so you'll likely use 144hz monitors at 120hz to get Lighboost.

The difference between H and HE is H comes w/ 3D Vision 2 Lightboost Glasses. I have a Radeon card, not a big nVidia fan, so that a moot point and not needed. Plus that $590 vs $440...

Yah, I realize the 144hz will need to go 120hz for light boost..... but I think the youtube boobie review above shows the BenQ does look washed out compared to the ASUS. I think a bit anyway. Not many comparisons out.
