Have a 6800 and Arctic Cooling NV5 (or tried it)?

Okay. I used to have an ATI 9600 but had problems with an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer 3 (I'm a stickler for quiet). My 9600 ended up dying, so now I'm a little paranoid about doing this switch. After mine died I found a couple reports on other forums (spcr) detailing similar experiences with 9600s (though with surviving vid cards). I haven't seen any problems with 9800s, only with 9600s, which I found strange.

So now in the name of good research vote in the poll and please detail what bad experiences you had if any. Please vote only if you have the 6800/NV5, though any and all comments would be appreciated.

I have used the VGA silencer on the HIS 9800pro ICQ, without issue,

I've also installed NV5 Sileners on a EVGA 6800gt, & BFG 6800oc without issue and great results.

I would say they are extremely simple to install.

I've got a 6800 GT and got a NV silencer 5 it works great now. When I first got it the voltage regulator heat sink would actually hit the GPU cooler so it wouldn't contact the GPU evenly it resulted in temps about 5C above the stock cooler. I loosened the NV5 up a ilittle bit and it lowerd my temps by about 8 -10C. I wonder if everyone else has this problem with the voltage heatsink touching the back of the cooler? I would think so. I want to saw down the voltage heatsink just a tad bit to I can tighten the NV5 up some to make it on their tightier but for now it dropped my temps a good bit and made the card inaudible so I'm happy.

JBT, was it easy to tell that the voltage regulator heat sink was hitting the GPU cooler?

I installed an NV Silencer 5 on my Chaintech AA6800 NU, and it works great. temps dropped about 5C, and now the card is inaudible. It was easy to install, I had no problems. It was my first time installing an aftermarket GPU HSF, but not difficult at all.

Yes it was easy to tell You can just look at the card from the back whre the voltage heatsink is it clearly touches the plastic casing of the cooler . I could actually see the card bowing when I tightened it that much. If I get up the urge I will take the card out and take a a picture of it still touching just not as much.

I installed an NV5 on my 6800GT.. I was frustrated trying to get the freakin' power plug undone from the stock cooler, but after i almost snapped the thing off, I finally got it out.. that was the most trouble I had.
the rest is just undo the screws, take off the stock HS/fan and put on the NV5! I haven't noticed any decreases really in idle temps which is a little weird, but it's definitely silent.

How tight did you guys tighten the screws? mine are just snugged up, the rubber is still there, not completely squashed.. i am thinking i might have to tighten it up a little more. thoughts?

I just installed this NV5 silencer on my BFG 6800GT and my idle temps have increased from 58C with stock cooler to 61C with this NV5. At first I thought that I put too much thermal compound on the GPU so I removed the NV5, cleaned the GPU, applied new thermal grease and used a credit card to smooth it out. Then reinstalled the NV5. Now my temps are still higher than with the stock cooler!

I'm going to try loosening the screws a bit as JBT suggested and see if that helps.

Mine went on just fine, but I do have a BIG BEEF. Afer installing this cooler along with some arctic silver 5 my card how idles 2-3C HIGHER and actually has a higher load temperature as well.

I am thoroughly disappointed with my Silencer Rev5. I am thinking of possibly using the paste that came with the card instead of the AS5. Who knows? I have no clue what could be causing this, but the card still works so I do not see how I installed this cooler with the thermal paste incorrectly?

Wow, this may be what I am experiencing!!! Thanks for the info!

Well, I loosened the screws a bit. I put them on and tightened them with just my fingers. Then used the screwdriver to tighten them two more turns each. I shined a flashlight on it and the silencer is not touching the heatsink as described by JBT above. Right now it's idling at 61C. With the stock cooler it idled at 57C.

Don't bother. I'm using the thermal grease that came with the card for both the RAM and the GPU. Maybe I'll purchase some arctic silver this weekend and try to reapply it. There's got to be something I'm missing here.

my temps are exactly the same with the NV5 as they were with the stock cooler.. right now idling at 54C.. although the card is at 400MHz core, not sure what it would be at stock core speed, and I am too lazy to try, unless someone really wants me to.

Mine went on my BFG 6800GT perfectly. My temps are about the same but that's due to poor case ventilation.
