Have a question about the 4790k?

From what I understand the 4790k has a stock clock of 4.0 with a boost of 4.4. So if you overclock it to say 4.5, will the boost be 4.9?

Most 4790K CPUs are so finicky at 4.9 that really the only way to do it is by disabling Turbo and locking the multiplier in at 4.9. You'd be lucky to get one that runs well there, a more typical maximum with normal air or AIO (all-in-one) water cooling is 4.8.

It's a lot of effort for those extra 4-500MHz.

Just to echo, You may get to 4.9 on water, but the poblem you then may have to worry about is throttling under intense loads.

But the nice thing about this chip is that it performs Very well at stock speed.

From what I have seen 4.7 is the most commonly reached speed. And they run pretty hot as they require more voltage than the 4690K at the same speed.

So if I go with the 4790k , buying a ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO is a waste of money?

If I explain what I'm wanting, what I have and a budget, would you all be kind enough to put me a upgrade together that offers some future proof, performance and compatibility?

Depends on point of view.
If you really WANT 4790k + Maximus Hero, go for it. Not really a waste of money though.
But if you just NEED something that similarly good and yet a lot economical, 4690k + US$ 150 board would be sufficient. That price difference equals to one or two decent SSD.

For future proof, just grab X99 based system along with 6 core CPU. Its offer a serious performance for today's standard, and perhaps for the next 5 years or more.
X99 provides a lot of upgrading option in the future, not only 8 core, even more (Xeon family).

I don't know much about the x99 platform. Kinda looked at some of it, but it was a pretty penny.

I thought about the I7, as I own a I7 975. But its actually showing signs of lack of performance plus its just getting old. Add in I have a 970 gtx that supports 3.0, as my x58 MB only supports 2.0. A few other things as well.

From what I read it seems that the I5 4690k is close to the I7 4690k when it comes to games.

I also thought about a ssd. But again this is new territory for me.

This was my original plan. If anyone has any comments, opinions please chime in.

I5 4690k
MSI gamming 5 MB
Not for sure about ram for this MB. prefer good ram.

Parts from my old rig.
NXZT phantom case (atx)
650w psu
Samsung spinpoint f3 500gb hd
dvd/cd
dvd/BR
fans and the regular stuff.

If I were to go with the I5 MB, and ram what kind of clocks would I be looking at?

As far as a ssd, can I use it by itself as a stand alone hdd?

My budget is 600 US dollars. My original plan was cpu, ram and MB upgrade.

I have a I7-4790k and a MSI Gaming 5, if you need to pick my brain.

I will say this up front. I had to RMA my first Gaming 5, because it wouldn't post with dual channel memory (tried 3 different mem modules and brands), it had a bent cpu pin. Don't let that sway your purchase, MSI replaced it quickly. My new one is flawless, and I love the OC genie it has.

You know what, yes quad core nehalem looks and feels old now.
You have two options for upgrading:
A. Buy totally new rig, and for $ 600 you can get:
- i5 4690k ($240)
- MSI Z97-G45 Gaming ($124)
- DDR3 1866 16GB kit ($180)
- Decent air cooling ($56)

OR..
B. Just replace your i7 975 for a $100 2nd-hand hexacore Xeon.
Add a good watercooling, just say about $120 such as Corsair H1xx series, and push to 4.5 Ghz. You'll love it.:thumbsup:
Here is a simple comparison between 6 core Xeon (std/non-OCed) and 4690k:
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X5650-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4670K

Summary: considerably equal !
Do not forget to grab one SSD, at least 128GB ($100 ) or 256 GB. I bet you dont wanna go back to traditional HDD.
TOTAL, less than $350 simple upgrade that still kicking hard compared to its newer rival.
And you still can use most of your old parts, nothing wasted.
Even your i7 975 still worth something in 2nd hand market, defininitely will make total spending even lower.

And one thing, PCI-E 3.0 really do not offer much difference to 2.0.

I have been super happy with my 4690K. Overclocking it to 4.5 took all of 1 minute. Go into bios, set vcore to 1.20, set multi to 45, done. Runs 100% solid with OCCT and Prime95. Runs around 45C in BF4, will hit 60C under OCCT. This is with a H100i cooler in my tiny case.

I am sure I could hit 4.7 or so, just no need.

Also, as of last week NewEgg had 240GB Intel 730 SSDs for 150 bucks. Great drive for the price.

I can only speak for myself, but upgrading from an i7 to an i5 just doesn't sit well with me.

Agreed.
That's why i prefer replace 975 with hexacore, either xeon or 980/990x. Simpler and much much cheaper with a huge performance leap from quadcore Nehalem.

Thanks guys. I have never been let down here by the members opinions.

As far as upgrading to a hexcore with my current MB, ram I don't think this will be good for several reasons. I have mention a few, plus this MB has got a lot of hard hours put on it. ASUS don't even support it anymore.

I would love a x99 platform, but its not cheap.

So I have to determine what I need. I have the luxtury of being able to test games. And there are some games in development that will knock your socks off.

Believe it or not most of these devs are using the 4770k or the 4790k, with multiple gpus. Later this year ( baby steps for me ) I plan on picking up another 970.

So I came up with this upgrade. Let me know what you think please.

I7 4790k

ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO

G.SKILL Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)

As far as cooling gos, I'm all ears. Not fond of water, as I have had issues in the past, but if its a must I can budget 100 us dollars at time of purchase maybe more due to find some of these parts on sale (microcenter has the 4770k@ 279.00.)

My next upgrade will be a ssd, most likely
with in a month of the MB, ram, cpu upgrade.

Again thanks for you support.

I paid $89 for my H100i cooler (on sale). Its an all-in-one water cooler. It does not have the hassle of a custom water loop. There are some other good all-in-one coolers as well. They are worth a look if your case will support them.

As far as I can tell, no one actually answered this question.

When you manually overclock, it automatically disables Turboboost. If you set the clock at 4.5GHz, that's all you'll get. It will not turbo to 4.9GHz.

If you're actually interested in best performance for your dollar do something like this

i7-4790k
Hyper 212 EVO (~30 bucks)
ASrock fatal1ty Z97 killer (~100 bucks)

Then get an SSD from one of the deals on slickdeals.net

Above is my exact build and I've been really happy with it.

It doesn't make sense to spend 100 bucks on watercooling, 150+ bucks on a motherboard when it means you cannot afford to have a single SSD in your build. The SSD will improve general performance a million percent more than getting 300 extra MHz over the stock turbo by overclocking (which is not even guaranteed...).

delidded 4970k lose warranty so forget about 4.9 ghz

According to Intel, de-lidding a devils canyon chip should not be required as they use a different thermal compound than standard chip. Just about every review out there shows they run ~10-15C cooler than a 4770K.

After reading this I don't see doing much OCing since the cpu is already at 4.0. The ssd I think is a no brainer.

What ram would you recommend with that MB?

I would go 16 GB if budget allows. its not wasted as Windows can make uses of it and even some games will allocate more system ram if you have it. I would also go 2133 to get the most out of the 4790K. and unlike with Sandy and Ivy, the memory speed does make a little bit of an impact in some games. the 2133 ram I have is also just 1.5 v.

I'll have to dig up a chart from Anandtech that shows potential impacts of different speeds of RAM. The chart also shows a benefit to buying low latency memory as well as faster speed, such that, for instance, CAS 8 1866 could be equal or faster than CAS 10 2133, at least something along those lines.

EDIT:

Here it is:

in my personal case 8GB has been more than fine- you honestly don't need 16GB for vast majority of usage..and if you find you do for your particular case it's easy to pickup another 8GB and drop it in later. On the scale things I would put money in up front on I would still go for bigger SSD over 16 GB ram.
