I have an apple laptop ssd and Id like to use it as an external storage for backup. whats the simplest method for this? want to backup the images and have it in my car so it isnt in the house.

its a regular toshiba ssd. how would I connect it? I have esata/usb 3 and other ports. whats the easiest way to come connect it in, transfer files, unplug and slip in my pocket?

this case a decent choice?

Looks good with many screws.
USB is probably better than eSATA for compatibility purposes.

got the case and installed the ssd inside. use the usb 3 with antec 900 v2 case. it makes the sound but nothing pops up saying new hardware.

nothing shows up in my computer

right click on my computer>manage>disk management>right click on the drive and either it crashes out of disk management or when it stays EVERYTHING in the menu is greyed out.

*OPEN
EXPLORE
MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE
.......
......."

except "help"

what am I doing wrong?
thank you in advance

Are you attempting to use it as external storage on a Mac device, or a Windows machine? By default Mac drives are formatted to HFS+ J which Windows computers won't be able to read without special drivers/programs installed, because they typically use NTFS.

In order to make it readable on both Windows and Mac devices concurrently you need to back up everything that's on it, then re-format the drive to exFAT.

thank you for the help. the drive was my brothers. hes an apple fan. I have a w7 pc.

im trying to format it but its all greyed out. I connected it properly in the case. when connected it makes the dung-ding sound and it doesnt show up in my computer. when I go into disk management and try a right click>format its all greyed out. what do I need to do?

I have used another drive like this that he gave me on another pc with no issue. I used it to install W7 on it and was the boot drive. I also then moved that drive to another pc and its working fine. so maybe the case is not good or some setting that im missing.

Can you connect the SSD on the computer like a normal drive to see if the SSD is good? Maybe the external case is bad. I am not familiar with Apple file systems but I *think* it would have let you to format the disk.

In my experience Windows disk management throws a fit with HFS drives/partitions (disk management is a terrible utility in general) and will make it seem like the drive is corrupt/not working if you try to reformat it. I've always had to use disk utility on my Mac to reformat HFS to FAT or exFAT for use between Windows/OS X. I know that's not terribly helpful, but if you have easy access to your brothers Mac it might be easier to use it to format.

Depending on how old it is it may be in a partitioning format that the pc cannot read.

One the disk is connected open up an administrator command prompt and type in
diskpart and press enter

type list disks and see what number the drive shows up as

type select (#) where # is the number from the previous command

type clean ---- this will erase the disk, make sure that you are selecting the correct or one you can screw up the others

type exit

type exit again

then you can disconnect and re-connect the drive and format it normally as you would in disk management

ok, removed the drive from the case and connected it to mb sata internally.
shows it in bios. come to format in disk management. nothing the same greyed out menu as with the case.

so found an app. aomei partition assistant. gave it a label "TOSHIBA SSD", and it formatted but it wouldnt let me give it a drive letter. it showed a * near the drive but cant assign it a drive letter. I tried S and it dodnt want to do it. got an error.

doesnt show up in my computer. what the hells going on.

btw how does one check the health of an ssd? I dont think this drive is an issue, but I think the samsung evo 840 is on its way out. performance sucks azz.
