I did once in my younger days. Got burned out and gave my two weeks without even lining up a job and was just going to take a short break. Funny enough the company lost the contract a week later and everyone was out of work which qualified me for unemployment. I applied for it but even before the first check comes I was already working again at a temp gig so never got to collect any. That was about as close as I ever got to collecting unemployment in my whole career.

I quit my job a few months ago and became a full time, self-employed tutor. Best... decision... ever.

I've read a fair share of your job posts on the forum and I have a good general perception of how skilled you are. I very much doubt that it will be hard for you to find another job, but still there is the security of having the other job before you go tell the boss that you're leaving. As hard of a worker as you are and your mentality the owner would be quite foolish to let you go without conceding to at least some if not most of your issues. Working 14 hour days for two weeks straight (at least that you've mentioned so far) is not something that I would want to do with any frequency at all and it sounds like this is not the first time that something like this has occurred. Here's what I would suggest that you do:

1) Begin looking for a new job now, start talking to the recruiters that have contacted you that are recruiting for companies that you have an interest in

2) Stop putting in huge amounts of overtime, as in now. Knowing your mentality, because I have a similar one, it may actually be hard for you to do this because you hate the thought of slacking off in your mind.

3) Sooner or later (and with your boss it'll probably be sooner) your boss will likely confront you about the decrease in time he's seeing. Explain to him the situation, that the amount of time you're putting in at work is not allowing you to have a life of your own outside of work.

It just really sounds like you're becoming more and more miserable at work and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's already started to affect your non work life.

Yep. It was such a stupid situation with a "contract" employer. Long story short, asshole tried to dump a big job on me when I told him I didn't have time. I gave him the "day" of work I promised him then told him to eff off. I just couldn't do it anymore. The work was mind-numbing and the years of abuse, being his little bitch just got to me. And it was just a casual job on top of my full-time job. Can't believe he thought he could use me like a bitch and underpay me when he knew I didn't need him.

I also hate my full-time job. The only thing that gets me through the day is the paycheck and the thought that I'm going to quit. Three years later of saying I'm going to quit, I'm still there. Recruiters aren't chasing after me, but if I bothered to try, I could probably get a similar job at a different company. Problem is I can't do this shit anymore. It's mind numbing, I almost go days without talking to anyone.

Tough call. I know how hard a decision it is, especially when you sort of need a paycheck.

P.S. Check your resignation laws. My state doesn't allow sudden quitting.

Sadly, it has...:'(

Oh, and in general, I generally love what I'm doing and my co-workers are great. I'll just never be 'my boss' and he keeps pushing it. I tried to cut corners and was burned by the customer and finally sucked it up and started doing it on my own time. Now, that's not enough. What's really sad is that he never acknowledges that amount of cost cutting I do on 'beating down salesmen' on price. I'm the only person in the building that negotiates with the salesmen. I would almost bet that I save more in getting the salesmen down on price than my salary is per year (no joke).

I suspect that all of this has come about because he has had to jump in and do a few of 'my' jobs because he over scheduled the workload. On top of that, we had a job pulled today because I couldn't get to it (time and material job that had to be done on site, no working from home on this one).

There's a magical feeling watching machinery come to life.....to see a sparkle in the customer's eye. To have a customer just three weeks ago walk up and tell me that 'this is giving me a chubby' while watching his machinery run and the interaction between the operator and the HMI.

Right now, the magic feels more like voodoo.....

Now might be a good time to start drinking.....

I did once, was a smaller company started doing silly things, and got on at Honeywell a few months after.

Unfortunately that fell through in the long run, I wanted to retire from there, but I still have a bit of a pretty nice 401K and a pension from the 9 years there that are still earning money.

Sometimes you have to take a leap I guess, the place I'm at now is still aerospace but smaller. It's growing but I'm getting old these days.

You gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes.

I'd like to drink a beer with ya sometime Engineer, but I imagine we do some nights

oh i must have confused you w/ indycolts or someone else

i think finding something else ASAP and then quitting sounds like a good idea. unless you have enough $ to go for years with finding work.

Yes, I left for a huge raise to do consulting last year. I am probably going to have to jump to a new company early next year since the current company can't seem to sell water to a dying man in the Sahara.

I did but the company was in serious trouble, I was an officer, and my boss was wanting me to sign things that I knew weren't true and given the current regulatory climate I figured leaving the company was the least bad option. Do I regret it? No. Do I make less now? Yes.

I quit my programming job like that, without another job lined up.

After fixing the in-house software and adding functionality, they basically told me to 'just look at the software and see if anything needs to be done'. Isn't that what I just did?

Was bored out of my mind. Asked to go part time hourly for a big pay cut, because I'd rather be poorer but have more time - nope; if that department looked like it didn't need the money to pay the programmers, their budget would be cut.

Quit not long after, and although I'm now in a different field that pays less, I'm much happier. Helps if you don't have a wife and family to support.

Oh, that's a great feeling...

I lead a big project, made sure everything was ready ahead of time, did all the bitch work, and pretty much got ignored at the end when a higher status employee jumped in near the end. If I wasn't already jaded as hell by that point, I'd have quit too.

Considered jumping to a university about a month ago, but the pay was just too low. I figure I should do this a few years and hopefully I can settle into a cushy government job and coast to retirement.

What's the worst that can happen if you were to quit your job today? Will you die? Are you going to lose everything?

A better question would be what do you have to gain? Would be you happier? Less stress? Think about your situation in a 5- 10 year time frame. Where do you see yourself?

Most people just exist in their job. They go to a job that they don't like for 40+ years so they can retire. Then they either end up dying or they realize that they wasted the best parts of their life working. Don't fall into this category.

Get out! If you have the money travel the world. Recharge your batteries.
