Well, I dont really see how stuff coming on 2 CD's increases speed THAT much. I can see having 1 Install disk & 1 Play disk working but thats more a convenience thing rather than a speed thing.

One of the reasons that DVD software has not taken off is that there is a natural limit as to how much code a single group can churn out before the overheads from mangement get too high. Its very hard to pump out multi-million lines of code and its also very expensive. What else are you going to fill a CD?DVD with. With games, theres always textures/sounds/movies etc but a program really only needs code, a couple of pictures and some documentation. Putting in an hour of high quality movie into an office app is expensive and not going to be that huge a selling point. I suppose at some point, all the help files etc will be in movie format but, until then, it is still pretty much impossible to get a single app package to get much more than 600MB

The next generation is already out - they're called DVD-RW drives

By the way, get a Lite-On or spend a bit more to get a Plextor, Sony's are a piece.

I agree and disagree, the next generation is DVD-RW and I agree with that. I disagree that Lite-Ons are good, they are worthless trash. How can you even compare a Lite-On to a Plextor? Plextors blow them and all other burners away.

I also think the guy who posted the thread is on crack. 60X burner??!! One question, WHY??!! Even if it were possible by some miracle, how can one be so busy as to necessitize an increase from a cd burned in 4 min, to one burned in 1.5, its nuts. I also agree with the guy who says there's no need for a really fast DVD drive because they don't need to be spun as fast as a CD. DVD-RW is here, and its bigger and better than ever and those of you who think its expensive, it's not, I almost $hit myself when I recently saw DVD-Burners for as low as $225!!!! WOW! In fact I got an e-bay auction going on for a brand new Pioneer DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW, no joke, look me up as patriotcomponents on ebay, look at my auctions. You can pick this baby up for $289.

the speeds have pretty much plateaued. around 50x (max) is when the thermal considerations, and forces on the CD (the disc) starts to affect the CD. faster it goes, the CD becomes very easily damaged.

diminishing returns started with the 16x drives. after that, clv/cav/etc started being implemented to reduce the stresses on the CD.

Games, music, and other art media have been the driving force for much of the advancements in desktop technologies. I don't see this changing in the future. Who cares that there aren't any app packages over 600MB. Video games, movies, and music are (hopefully) enough to drive advances in storage technologies.

By the way, isn't the Oracle 8i install over 600MB?
