Got a bill from my insurance company yesterday, was off today so I called them up...

Me: "So I got a bill from you all, why am I being billed a month early & what is the charge for?"
Them: "It's your monthly bill."
Me: "I don't have a monthly bill, why are you charging me monthly?"
Them: "Your policy renews next month."
Me: Can you look back & tell me when I paid my monthly bill last time?"
Them "June."
Me: "Why did you change my bill to monthly?"
Them "I dunno..."
Me: What discounts are you showing for me?"
Them: "Multi car."
Me: "So you have billed me, changed my policy, and haven't noticed me of any changes?"
Them: "Um..."

20 minutes later, I had a good driver, good grades, & paid in full discounts reinstated... They pulled the same crap last year, so I was ready this year...

And insurance companies wonder why they're hated :|

Nah, they were a cut rate outfit through insurance.com, Safeco...

Just told them my policy wouldn't be renewed, they came down another $100, but screw them, still saving $600/year by switching to Geico.

:/ man you were being scammed or something. We have safeco out here in CA and they are not a cut-rate company one of the more exspensive ones, but latley their marketing choices have been less than desirable.

Oh I guess I am not surprised of the service you got though.... Insurance.com.... heheh

You should comparison shop for insurance every two years or so. Every year if you have the stomach for it.

The old saying "familiarity breeds contempt" always comes to mind when I think of insurance companies. They'll low ball you to get your business and jack up the rates every year.

It's good for both you and the insurance industry to shop regularly for rates. It'll save you money and help keep them more honest. (If that's even possible)

You know, I do nearly everything online, but I'm just hesitant to fill out those long questionnaires at the insurance shopping sites.

I contact local, independent agents by phone. Agents or offices that represent several companies and can give me a quote from the one with the best rates.

I know this is probably no help, but it's how I do it.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK most online purchases come with a discount of 10~20%.

You're taking a huge chance. I hope you never get hit by an uninsured motorist or are involved in a hit-and-run!

Sorry, I carry liability & uninsured motorist... This is Texas. The idiot in the brand new car that hit you probably doesn't have freaking insurance, and hit & run seems to be a local competition here.

I haven't done insurance shopping in a while, the CSR was able to instantly pull up my driving record, daughter's DL #, and the VIN #'s of my cars.

Sort of freaked me out how easily she was able to get all that info

Well, to be honest, it really depends on the luck of the draw - some agents pull sh!t like this all the time regardless of carriers, others go to the ends of the Earth sticking up for you . . ..
Of course, the better companies have more of the latter then the former - oh the stories I could tell (but then be fired for violating privacy disclosure)
