I have Asus p4b533-e which has USB2.0 built in on the motherboard. Problem is whenever I install my new external USB2.0 drive, it keep saying that this drive can be faster if you plug it in on a highspeed usb, click here. When I clicked it you can see that my usb2.0 has 6 usb roots, but none of them are occupied. On my device manager, you can see one Intel82801DB/DBM USB2.0 enhanced host controller, and three Intel82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller, and last, four usb root hub.

What shown on the device manager is exactly the same as my Dell Inspiron 8600, but when I plug in my USB2.0 drive, my dell picked it up as usb2.0 drives, install drivers, and all is good.
My desktop is different story, it seems like all my usb port are controlled by the usb1.1 controller and not the usb2.0 controller. Is there a way to get the USB2.0 controller take charge ?

Thanks all

Yes I tried every usb port on the computer. Even the manual said that all USB ports are either usb2.0 or 1.1

Yup I am positive that it is enabled on the bios, You can see in on device manager.
I finished re-installing my computer last night, and still have the same problem. So its not driver, or bios problem because all up to date.

That board may have an sis chipset. If it does, I had to install "service pack 4" to get windows 2k pro to work with usb 2.0. After installing, I had to do a "refresh" of the usb driver to get windows to recognize 2.0.

I have windows xp installed and the motherboard is asus p4b533-e with intel chipset. When you look at my device manager you can see that usb2 is properly installed and usb mass strorage device is listed under there.
Nevertheless, my drive is recognized as usb1.1 and it is slow as hell
I even re-installed windows xp sp2 just incase my windows is all screwed up, but I ended up with the same result.
When I plug in my USB drive, my computer basicaly tell me "hey idiot why dont you plug this drive into one of your usb2 port!!! here's the port you can plug into" and it showed me the usb2 controller and 6 empty root.
I got a headache now trying to figure this out, any help from you guys is appreciated it.

Thanks

Are you plugging the drive into a front USB port? Occasionally, the wires that go to front USB let in so much interference that it forces the port to go into USB 1.1 mode. Try plugging it in one of the back ports.

I have the same exact problem, same mobo too, Shows 3 regular usb 1 hubs, and 1 usb 2 port. Funky thing is, ive plugged em in all the ports, and they never show in under the usb 2 port. They always go to the usb 1 ports for some reason. Something funky.
Azev you figure it out?

maybe the ports on the io panel are 1.1 whilst if u use the supplied extra port (if there are any) that plug into usb headers on the motherboard it might be 2.0, also check the bios or any jumpers on the board that maybe incorrectly configured

They are 2.0, the mobo book, shows all 4 ports on the motherboard are 2.0. Ive had it working at 2.0 before, dont remember what i did. Hrmm..

Gonna try this when i get home. Delete all the usb controllers, items in device manager in safe mode, and let it rebuild upon reboot. Read it fixed it for some.

nope I gave up jason. I decided to just buy pci usb2 card. But fate is messin around with me, I am on my 2nd card, and it still give me alot and lots of problem.

Btw, my case doesnt have any front usb port, so I always plug them on the back.
I have a 1gig sandisk drives and it is detected at usb2 and I can transger 800mb files very quickly.
When I plug in my usb2.0 drives, it is recoqnized as usb1.1 and it is slow as hell.
I've tried using 2 different case from different manufacture, and got the same result.

I bought NEC chip usb2 pci card and its hoggin my cpu like there's no tomorrow. Bought $20 usb2.0 card from compusa (ali base chipset) and it works real well. Gave that to my gf, then I bought another card (via chipset) and it came DOA. So I am waiting for an RMA to newegg and get koutech ali chipset usb20 pci card.

Hey let me know if you fix yours by deleting it in safe mode.

Gonna try it right when i get home. In about 2 hours from now. The problem is basically this, on device manager, no usb 2 root hub is shown, but i have 4 regular usb root hubs for some reason. Normal device manager under usb items is suppose to show, 3 usb 1 root hubs, and 1 usb 2 root hub. Does your device manager show a usb 2 root hub? Azev?

Edit: oops does look like you have 4 root usb 1 hubs like me, So i will see how it ends up

Ok, the removal of items in safe mode didnt help, but i think i found the solution. If you go in device manager, the very last root hub. Goto properties on that. It should show 6 port under one of the tabs, if so this is the one that is suppose to be the USB 2 root hub, rather then USB root hub. Click update driver, and point to new drivers.

I will test out some usb 2 devices to make sure full function. Try and let me know azev

Well it works at usb 2 now, problem is now i have the same problem as before, where the usb2 device will go on and off. Like connect disconnect, connect disconnect. Never was able to fix this problem, ive read that it could be conflict with onboard lan, so i will pick up a nic tomorrow and see how it goes

You know what, after messin around some more tonight, I conclude the usb port on this motherboard are just plain stupid.
I tried doing what you did, reinstall the hub with the latest driver from asus website. The name is changed from just usb hub to usb II hub. Hmmm good sign I thought, but not until later when I pluged in my usb2.0 drives.

For some godly weird reason, my usb drives always connected to the wrong hub. There are 4 hub, 3 usb1.1 with 2 ports each, and one usb2.0 hub with 6ports. There are 4 usb controller, 3 usb1.1 and 1 usb2.0
Everytime I pluged in my usb drive, it always connect to one of the usb1.1 hub not the usb2.0 hub, but evertime I pluged in my sandisk usb2.0 flashdisk, it connected to one of the usb2.0 root.

I've did some research before, and usb2.0 controller should picked up when it detected a usb2.0 capable device, and the device should connect to it. This is not the case with our motherboard though, so far I can only get usb2.0 flash drive to work. I have no other usb2.0 device to test except my 2 external drives and my usb key drive.

Sorry if I sounded frustated, because I am. Oh yeah btw raise usb voltage to maximum on the bios and the connect, disconnect problem is gone.

This may seem silly, but do you have at least SP1 for windows XP?

Ill try the max voltage and see if i get the fluctuating disconnect problem.
The items i plug in goto the correct hub. IE if usb 2 device, itll show in dm it is connected to usb 2 root hub, or when it is usb 1 device, itll show connected to usb 1 root hub. Yea i know its frustrating.
