I love to bite my nails and that results in the occasional infection. This one is bad though, my index finger has swollen to maybe 2 or 3 times it's normal size down to the first joint and it keeps spreading.

I'm about to go to the clinic and I'm sure I'll get some antibiotics but they will probably need to lance as well to drain. Has anyone ever had this done? Does it hurt like a sonofabitch or do they deaden it? I'm not looking forward to the shot much less this infected finger getting jabbed (I'm a big wuss).

Will hurt like a SoB and will bleed ALOT. Lots of nerve endings and lots of blood vessels in the finger, especially the tips.

I also used to cut my nails incorrectly and down into the corners. Cant tell you how many ingrown nails I've had over the years which required painful corrections at a doctor's office. Learn to properly cut your nails!

I don't see how you people let it get so bad you have to go to the doctors. The second I get something like that and it starts to hurt I break out the needle and fix it myself. Not like it's that painful and the relief makes it worth the little bit of pain you got to suck up.

i stilll have the remnants of a white line on my left ring finger when this happened to me in my senior year of highschool

my finger was also swollen to like twice the size it was normally because of chewing my nails

once i saw that line i decided to drain it right away

a lot of fucking puss and bad shit came out

you should go to the hospital so you do not do anything to your finger including pernament damage because you probably do not know what you are doing

this will get a lot worse if you do not do something about it

you need to take care of it right away

There is an easier way of dealing with this... Get some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, wet q-tip with the rubbing alcohol and press the q-tip into the corner of your finger where it's infected or do all the corners of the finger if you want. The infection should go away pretty quickly. I mean I guess you can dip your finger into some rubbing alcohol as well but I use the q-tip to really get the alcohol into there... There is a chance it will sting a little bit but it will subside pretty quickly. Use the Rubbing Alcohol + Q-tip treatment 3X per day.


I did this treatment when I started to get an "ingrown toe nail" which really is just an infected toe. The "surgery" for the ingrown toe nail is just a money grab. I stopped getting "in grown toe nails" after discovering the use of rubbing alcohol.



Obviously if your symptoms don't improve in a day or three with this treatment then go visit a doctor. I've found antibiotics to be very INEFFECTIVE for this sort of condition.

Do you mean an incision and drain? I had to get one in my cheek by my jawbone. A tooth that I just had a root canal on, spread the infection to my jaw and it was because the tooth was infected for a while and after the root canal the infection needed to make its way out.

Antibiotics did nothing because it spread to my skin on my face. The incision and drain hurt like a mofo. I can't describe it but right when they gave me local anesthetic on the abscess they also punctured it. It hurt so bad but didn't feel anything on the incision inside by my gum. They put a drain in there and I had to clean it with alcohol and peroxide. The pain was very bad but 800mg ibuprofen helped every 8hrs until it healed.

his finger is already totally swollen like shit

the only way he can get rid of it is by draining it or going to the hospital

This only works if you catch the ingrown very early. I have fixed several ingrowns using your method. As the nail grows and digs more into the flesh, it requires medical intervention. When you have pus under your nail and the whole thing is swollen 3x size, all of the alcohol and cotton swabs in the world wont help. That nail has to come off

Yea it will hurt even when they give you local anesthetic the needle will feel like they are ripping into your nerves and ligaments because they literally inject it right at the site not much just around it. But you will be happy once its all over and healed. Go get it done before the infection spreads somewhere else and then you are in big trouble.

I actively try to avoid it, letting them grow long enough so that I can trim them properly and have a well-groomed look, but next thing I know, when I'm halfway to that goal, I've chewed two or three fingers before I even acknowledge the action.

It's worse than nicotine.

I don't want to do it, and I've successfully quit more than once, but obviously not for long.


In reality, it's about telling your un-conscious self to stop being an animal and get with the modern non-animal ways. That's not always easy for every single person - it is an instinctive grooming practice, after all.

i have upgraded to letting my fingernails grow for a while and then trimming them by grabbing one end of my fingernail with my teeth and then stripping them horizontally

I just got back and they didn't lance it afterall. I got a shot of rocephrin (sp?) and some antibiotics. He said that if he stuck it right now it wouldn't really drain out or pop so the antibiotics will need to attack it. I've had this happen before and it ended up just popping and oozing a tremendous amount of blood and puss, but I've never had (and thankfully still haven't) had anybody stick it.

Lol. And for further clarification on how it happened when I bite my fingernails or pick my toenails a lot of times the nail comes off jagged and rips all of the way up to the cuticle, so I'm constantly having open wounds there. And I never treat the wound, I just let the blood coagulate and call it a day. I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened more than it has.

And yeah I know nasty habit, I should learn, etc. but I figure there are far worse vices to have. Since it wasn't drained and thus it's still puffy, I'll try to have pics up later.
