I'll ignore the nail biting and just say infections wouldn't happen if you kept your hands clean. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide is a cheap first aid supply you should have on hand anyways.

This only works if you catch the ingrown very early. I have fixed several ingrowns using your method. As the nail grows and digs more into the flesh, it requires medical intervention. When you have pus under your nail and the whole thing is swollen 3x size, all of the alcohol and cotton swabs in the world wont help. That nail has to come off

Well we gotta see pics. I had a pretty swollen finger like that and did the method with the rubbing alcohol and it cleaned up completely in a week. Never gone back to the doctor again for an "ingrown toenail".

But yeah if it's really infecting you, just try to stop it so you don't have to go through that.

Finger tips are fairly sensitive. When I donate blood I find that thing they punch on your finger to check iron levels hurts more than the actual needle in the arm, it's kind of funny actually. I'd hate being diabetic, have to do that multiple times a day. Ouch.

Google image "ingrown toenail" for some horrific examples of ingrowns that have waited too long. As someone who knows what those feel like (I've never let myself go as long as some of the images suggest), I can't even imagine the pain of some of those examples.

Sometimes its not just the alcohol. The act of pressing the q-tip into the corner may have just freed the piece of skin that was catching on the nail corner. Once you free the skin from ripping with the constantly growing nail, that in itself will remedy the ingrown nail. The alcohol I'm sure helped to clean the infection anyways.

Lol. And for further clarification on how it happened when I bite my fingernails or pick my toenails a lot of times the nail comes off jagged and rips all of the way up to the cuticle, so I'm constantly having open wounds there. And I never treat the wound, I just let the blood coagulate and call it a day. I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened more than it has.

And yeah I know nasty habit, I should learn, etc. but I figure there are far worse vices to have. Since it wasn't drained and thus it's still puffy, I'll try to have pics up later.

i knew someone in HS who chered on her nails. she chewed her thumb nail compleatly off. im serious ALL THE WAY OFF. over a long period of time so she had no nail just nasty ballsack looking skin where it should have been
