If I recall, in the early 80's, there was some computer game where you went left, right, forward, backward, etc. And, my character would occasionally get bitten by chiggers that caused an infection, etc. Found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventureland_%28video_game%29

Otherwise, oddly, I've never been curious enough to actually figure out what a chigger is. Apparently, we don't have chiggers in my neck of the woods. No venomous snakes, no venomous spiders, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no earthquakes, no wildfires, and reason #900 why it's awesome here: no chiggers.

Wow, I sort of miss that game.

I was bit up weekend before last, blazing a trail through some tall grass along the river looking for a good fishing spot. Damn, that makes me sound a bit redneck...

Only really bad part about it, I didn't catch a single fish that day, but had around 30 chigger bites on each ankle. Luckily, I did manage to stay out of the poison ivy.

no, but my buddy who did a stint in Iraq constantly complained about chiggers feasting off his testicles.

No, I don't think so.

But if I ever do get bitten, I'll be sure that it gets flagged.

When I was ~7yo or so, I sustained no less than 3 chigger bites on my nutsack, right before our family summer vacation--week in DC that year.

To this day, I recall the week of misery marked by calomine lotion and daily endless walking through museums and well-paved swampland in the summer. Ugh.

Don't have them in California. I've lived in the sticks almost all my life and have only been bitten by fleas and ticks. Guess that's another reason why eastern humidity sucks.

Too many times growing up.

Haven't ran into any down here in years.

Funny part is I used to in Indiana years ago growing up, but not in FL.

Probably don't run around as much where they are here I guess these days.

They embed in the skin, put a drop of nail polish over the site, that'll suffocate it.

false.

they feed off of the well of blood they create, then the protolarvae drops off. there is no chigger inside the skin. This was the original idea for the nail polish, when it was once thought that they burrowed in, but they do not do that. Nail polish actually seems to work, though, despite it not suffocating anything. It relieves the itch, for whatever reason.

I thought only mites were allowed to use the ch word.

I lol'd pretty hard at this. Probably woke up my neighbors.

Anyway, I never saw or had these problems in grass. I lived in the Pacific Northwest though, so maybe they don't live up here.

When I was a kid my Dad owned a tree cutting and removal business and I had to work many a weekend for him. I wound up with attacks quite a few times...usually fairly mild but a few times they were quite severe. OMG they're miserable...calamine lotion, benadryl and showers seemed to help but nothing other than time cured it.
