Have you ever been hired for a job or hired others "on the spot"?

In retail you see a lot of hiring with little or no reference checks, interviewers or much of anything really. This is not of course the preferred method but it's a fact of life in any buisness with high turnover. If you need someone NOW you often hire the first person who walks in who gives you a good vibe.

Now in the rest of the buisness world they usually take their time hiring people. Extensive interviews, background checks, reference checks etc.. etc.. I'm sure though that even in non retail positions jobs are sometimes filled by the first available person.

Have you ever been hired for a job with little or no interview(s), and other checks?

And in a related question have you ever been "thrown into work" without any training because they were desperate for staff and had no time. Sink or Swim.

No, in fact I'm trying to change jobs now and had an interview yesterday. They said they will get back to me "in a few days" which is probably as fast as I've had. My current job it took them a month

Even when I worked retail I always had to go through multiple interviews and reference checks.

second job, I did a phone interview at 10am and then got a reply back that I got hired by 2pm the same day.

I've never been hired that way, but I have hired people that way simply because there was no other choice. When staffing stores in certain areas many times you're faced with more open positions than bodies to fill them. When you need 10 people RIGHT NOW and only one walks through the door you hire him and hope for the best.

My first real job i was hired on the spot. Lived in a town of about 1800 people and it was at a small mom and pop pizza place. Spent about 20 minutes talking and they asked when I could start.

When I got hired at Bose, they called me thrity minutes after I left. That, ofcourse, was for an internship. Too bad i could not land a full time position there....

Yes, in fact every job I've had. Not the most important positions, but pizza place, cheese factory, Comcast (job fair), and thanks to nepotism my next job I have only met the boss once a long time ago

I've never had to go through more than one interview for a job and I've only ever not gotten one job that I interviewed for.

yes! during college, I did temp work to make money because it was a lot easier than warehouse/retail/fast food and paid a lot more to boot... my first ever temp job was as a receptionist. I had 0 experience with anything relating to it whatsoever. I walked into the office, introduced myself to the office manager, and she pointed me to the front desk and said go.

I probably hung up on a couple people that first day, but it wasn't so hard to figure out outside of just general office protocol that it took a few days to learn (ie: which people I should *never* page, who in the company works in the field, etc)

My stint as a warehouse guy at circuit city (summer 2004, summer 2005 (two jobs that summer), and holiday season 2004-5) was an on-the-spot hire.

I decided to hire my assistant immediately after the interview. I had interviewed perhaps a dozen other folks.

Call center for Compaq - a big center called "The Answer Group" - they also did IBM, Gateway, Ericsson phones, E-Trade, Best Buy and later Geek Squad (and some more I'm sure).

Should have been 2 weeks of in-class training - after 1.5 days in the classroom we went on the phones cold. I lasted 9 months before getting into level 2 support, than another year before moving the IT department.

Wasn't too bad - had to literally read from the script as it was still warm from the laser printer as we went out to find a free cube. Didn't do so bad.

Grocery. I used to run a store in a pretty wealthy area. Typically a store is a few full timers in key positions like department managers and most of the staff is part timers, mostly high school kids. In this area the kids simply didn't work. They had allowances and were given cars on their 16th birthdays and none of them would be caught dead working where their friends could see them. Staffing the store was a major bitch, if someone came in wearing a prison uniform covered in blood they would have been given a shot.

All of the jobs I've gotten (non-retail) have been through recommendations by people I know. For all of them the interview process was little more than a formality.

First jobs in HS were retail at a video store. my brother worked there, then went to college. I applied, and then had a brief interview and then got the job a few days later. Good old times.

Temp job after my first year of college through a staffing agency was a breif visit to the agency's office. I did some paper work, a little typeing / computer proficiency exam and left. Got a call a day later stating they got data entry position starting in 2 day. I was like yay.

Current "real job" 2 interviews. One at college, and then another one at the office i work out of with the other supervisor. Same questions, same answers i replied. after they. Got a job after later on that night. Paperwork was sent 5 bussiness days later.

although now i'm looking for a new job...

Every job I've had(4), I've been hired on the spot. My last one, I don't think I filled out an application.

Working construction, all the time. Not only when I'd get dispatched from the union hall, since they then have the choice of putting me to work or paying me 4 hours for showing up, but when I used to go rustle my own work, it wasn't at all uncommon to hear, "Can you start right away...as in NOW?"

It's sad to say, but I do NOT remember the last time I filled out a job application. Maybe 1988...when I went to work for the electrical utility as their crane operator.

I've had 4 part time jobs since 2005, all known friends of my dad that have their own business's, only filled out an app once in 2004 and that was it. Last job I had was a summer job at a Ford Dealer working in Auto detail for about 12$ hr after taxes etc.

A friend of mine got hired "on the spot" (well, over the phone but immediately after his interview). He works in a high demand field though.
