All the jobs I've ever accepted have told me after the interview that they would hire me. The programming jobs had my resume in advance so they may have checked references, I don't know.

gigs:
1. Software box/mail/general inventory for small software company, no interview but my mom was their accountant.
2. Boston Market - short 2 min. interview about hours I was available and willing to work then I was filling out tax paperwork and starting the next day.
3. Uni cafeteria walked in, had a uniform 10 minutes later.
4. Small software company writing html/js/perl/ruby - sent them resume had an extensive 1.5 hour interview including some on the spot coding, walked out of there knowing I had a job and starting the next day.
5. Big software company, interviewed for about 15 minutes with one of the lead devs and walked out of there to meet my new manager.
6. The one company that called me back and offered me a job I ended up not accepting and moved to a new position in #5 (went from IT to engineering)

My first job when I was 16 was at an industrial distributor. My brother worked there and my cousin did, who knew the owner, so I guess we just came to some agreement one day that I would work there so I started coming in. No application or interview. I think from my brother and cousin that they knew I would be a reputable worker. I ended up working their continuously for over three years until I left town for college.

I worked a temporary job in college moving books to the new library. I seen a post on a bulletin about the job; it paid $9/hr no taxes which was awesome money for me, so I went right in and talked to them for 15 minutes and at the end of it they just had me fill out a form and I was hired. At the end I also recommended a friend who also got hired but quit shortly after (looked not good for me ).

But for the second question, no I've never been thrown into a job with no training.

Worked for a call center for about a year. If you were breathing and could speak english, you had the job. If you could speak english and spanish, you had the job and immediately got paid more.

No. When I was looking for a part time job a year ago I couldn't even get hired at 4-5 shitty jobs because I was overqualified.

Not exactly on the spot, but my last job with Tektronix (through Adecco) happened pretty quick.
About 5 minutes after I walked out of the interview I got a call on my cell from the hiring manager saying they wanted me. Which meant in that time the Tektronix people would have had to decide, call him, and then have him call me.

My current job I did 3 different interview days, one on the phone, two in person and a total of over 6 hours of interviewing with various people in the dept.

But after my final interview they offered me the job via a phone call 2 hours or so later.

Just to get promoted to my new (current) position and manager took them a month of back and forth with HR though.

I was technically hired on the spot for my first finance position. It was through a referral though so the interviewer pretty much knew what he was getting since one of the better workers in the department vouched for me. So the interview was pretty much went "so you get here ok, what do you think of the place, you wanna start next week?" Interview was 3 mins and that was it, no interviews with HR or the upper management. I was still subject to background checks though, there's no getting around that but it was after getting hired.

For the temping I'm doing now, I went in for some 'testing', did some 'testing' the night before, and I guess you could say that I got 'hired' on the spot. The staffing manager said she was impressed by my test scores (wee, I'm not retarded), and started calling me about jobs the next day. Unfortunately, I had a driving test that week, so couldn't start until the next week, and she thought I was blowing her off by refusing the first 2-3 jobs. Now I'm at job number 2, and no hating.

Yep, although I technically wasn't hired. It was a transfer within my company. I was completely unqualified for the position, but they were seriously shorthanded. My training was all on-the-job. Worked out pretty well so far.

I did for my internship. They said "We see no reason not to hire you" and then just took a couple days getting the offer arranged with the parent company and sent to me.

I've only ever had one job, but when I went to the interview the guy pretty much started off saying that they were going to hire me and started telling me what I would be doing. The funny thing though is I didn't actualyl start for another 8 months because I hadn't graduated college yet.

Most of my jobs were "on the spot", or had an interview. As far as student jobs I never had one where I did not get the job. For real job, I've only applied to one, and I still work for the company. I did do internal apps to other jobs but due to low seniority at first I did not get them. I really only applied to show interest. Recently I did get the server job, and that's where I'm at now. Apparently I did super good on the test.

Generally I go through 2 or 3 interviews - HR, company bigwig, and project manager - before getting hired. Occassionally I even have to take a test. For the contract I'm working now the test took 2 days to complete. It was quite involved.

Typically any job that hires you on the spot tends to be menial work that requires no real skill other than being able to speak english and obey simple commands.

The only job I was hired for the same day I "interviewed" was for a busboy job at a mexican restaurant. And as you can imagine, the job sucked, heh.

WHen i had my interview at fedex, it went sorta like this.

HR. "So tell me some of your strengths."

Me. "Lets cut thru all of this ok? If you hire me i will show up everyday when I am scheduled and perform the work. I dont call in ever, and am a hard worker."

HR. "Sounds good to me, when can you start."

LOL
now if only my future interviews would be as easy.

Now in the rest of the buisness world they usually take their time hiring people. Extensive interviews, background checks, reference checks etc.. etc.. I'm sure though that even in non retail positions jobs are sometimes filled by the first available person.

Have you ever been hired for a job with little or no interview(s), and other checks?

And in a related question have you ever been "thrown into work" without any training because they were desperate for staff and had no time. Sink or Swim.

- hired over the phone with a 5min interview ($80k/yr job).
- hired for short term contract ($100/hr) while having lunch w/friend who was a Sr VP.

Every job i've had was sink or swim except one. it also happens to be my record at 5 sec interview:
Old contract expired. New company hiring old employees. Met w/new mgr. I asked for a 30% raise. "ok." Should have asked for more. Oh well..

I had a BSEE and was working towards a comp sci degree. I did an internship. At the end of summer, I was offered a job (at a a very large company). No interview occurred. I just proved my worth.

There was a drug test of course and a background investigation due to the nature of the place I work.
