I know someone who bought 1000 32GB USB pens from ebay (he owns a computer shop). They all read as 32GB but are full after you put 2gb on them. I lol'd.

This apparently happens a lot with SD cards. They are marketed as 32gb, but fill up after 4gb. You have to be sure to get them from a legitimate vendor, otherwise, there is a good chance they are fake.

Seriously. It makes me wonder what point you have to hit to scam people out of stupid stuff like that. I mean really, an empty perfume bottle? Seriously? Almost makes me want to give people begging for a few dollars for "gas" the money just because you have to be at a pretty crappy point in your life to not be ashamed to con people out of a couple bucks.

That poster is challenged at best. I still have a perfume bottle that's entirely empty and would sell as a collector's piece in the $100+ range empty.

The full bottles go extremely higher.

got scammed by a gypsy in Italy once when I was 17.

we were in Rome, at the Spanish Steps. guy walks up to me and before I even realize what's going on, he's tying a bracelet around my wrist and demanding that I pay for it. adult me probably would have just told him to get bent, but teenage me was in a foreign country where my grasp of the language was tenuous at best, so I felt a bit scared and gave him a few lira notes just to get myself out of the situation.

In 1999 I fell for the white van speaker scam. IIRC I spent $90. They did sound better than the speakers I had though and when you factor in the lesson it was money well spent.

Hmm... scammed... I dunno, I tend to be pretty savvy. I did call a psychic once, when I was like 15. But I was mostly just doing that for amusement.

In case everyone isn't already aware: there's no such thing as psychic power.

Can't remember anything else off the top of my head... other than just y'know, your standard "this item isn't as useful or well made as I had expected" - which doesn't really count.

Oh I've got a good one: I was a liberal for most of my life until recently. I'd say I got pretty damn well scammed there.

Don't try to scam us; you're way too self absorbed to have ever been truly liberal.

I bought a vinyl plotter on ebay a few years ago. The seller never shipped it. He ripped me off for over $1000. His name was Meredith Loihle.
Soon after, I launched http://meredithloihle.com
Google his name, what's the first result?

Yes, I got duped into believing a liberal arts degree would be worth something.:'(

You're a member of a very big club, and not just for liberal arts degrees. Do a Google search for "Law School Scam" and see what comes up. Class action lawsuits have even been filed against law schools for intentionally publishing known fraudulent employment statistics.

I ordered two E-3lue (E-Blue) computer gaming mice on eBay for $12 shipped ($6 each). The auction title said that they were E-3lue Cobra mice. The mice I received look like the real thing, but were really cheap, garbagey counterfeits and one of the mouse wheels was broken. I put up a fight through the eBay dispute system and the seller relented and issued a refend to Paypal. Last I checked, the seller is still selling the same mice and calling them E-3lue Cobra mice.

Got scammed a few times back in the 90's trading baseball cards. Years ago I gave a bicycle part to a shop owner to have it fixed so I could sell it (was worth ~$400 on ebay at the time), he always gave me the run-around on ordering parts & fixing it, I never got it back, turned out he never believed I had the money for the repairs (which was odd because I bought a replacement fork through him and it cost me ~$300 which I paid in cash). By then the value of the old part was nothing on the used market.

There is the occasional hardware trade where the part you receive was abused, or so full of the stench from a chain smoker it's not worth the effort dealing with the part. But I'm a reseller so it just gets absorbed into the costs of running a business.

No major scams. I think the most important thing regarding this subject, is don't be a cheap-ass, because honest businessmen cannot stand dealing with cheap-asses, the only people who enjoy doing business for cheap-asses are people intending to scam them. There is a definite fine line between being smart with your money and being cheap.

I was 18 and that was the extent of my disposable income. I wish I could say I was a master negotiator, but it was literally take that or nothing.

Some guy got me good on a $50 bag of pot. He went up to his apartment and then ditched out the back.

I've never been THAT drunk.

Those particular guys stand near the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Street (aka where Bourbon St. starts). The further down you go, the more complex the scams get. Might sound weird, but it's the truth.

When I was a teenager, well before the internet, I was scammed by a telemarketing scheme. They convinced me that I just won a "3-D" camera, jewelry and some other stuff worth thousands of dollars, all I had to do was "pay the prize taxes" (btw, this was before I was a CPA ). Being naive and thinking "holy crap, I won something", I whipped out the credit card and paid $600. Got that package, and the "3-D" camera did produce pictures in "3-D", but it was still a cheap camera, the jewelry was cubic zirconia and the rest of the stuff was just crap. It came nicely boxed, though.

Can't say I've been scammed. I, too, tend to be pretty skeptical. When it comes to my hobbies, I don't buy used. I don't use ebay and I use CL sparingly.

So you screwed your parents even then?

Jesus, you are really trying too hard these past few days here to be a man finally.

I literally have no idea wtf you're talking about, or what you may think you're talking about. I wonder if you have me mixed up with another poster. I really don't care, let's go back to not talking to one another.

Not sure if you're trying to score points with people by bashing me, but it may backfire, they may actually start hating me less if they see you hating on me.

Don't try to scam us; you're way too self absorbed to have ever been truly liberal.

I think liberals are some of the most self-absorbed people around. I think that most of what they believe, claim to believe, and do are all about making themselves feel like they are great, righteous people. Call me a cynic, but when some 22 year old white girl from an upper middle class family is handing out water purifiers in Pakistan to little children, I think that's all about her and her gratifying herself. The state of "oh man I am SUCH A GOOD PERSON" bliss must be nearly at overload levels in such a person's brain. Liberals are the ultimate narcissists most of the time.

No but I "helped" my dad get scammed by accident. He was going to buy something using google checkout and I told him google checkout is OK. Somehow he ended up doing a western money wire transfer :S Luckily he was able to cancel it before they got the funds.

When I was a kid I traded some magic cards online and the guy sent me back terrible fakes. I don't know why he even bothered making the fakes. Never did get my cards back.
