When I was a teenager, well before the internet, I was scammed by a telemarketing scheme. They convinced me that I just won a "3-D" camera, jewelry and some other stuff worth thousands of dollars, all I had to do was "pay the prize taxes" (btw, this was before I was a CPA ). Being naive and thinking "holy crap, I won something", I whipped out the credit card and paid $600. Got that package, and the "3-D" camera did produce pictures in "3-D", but it was still a cheap camera, the jewelry was cubic zirconia and the rest of the stuff was just crap. It came nicely boxed, though.

Oh right, that was similar to a scam my brother and I fell for, I couldn't have been even 10 years old, and one of those pre-recorded calls comes saying our family won a free vacation to Hawaii... just so long as we immediately call back on a 900 number. I think it was $60 gone. And a day later parents shut off access to 900 numbers from the line.

I literally have no idea wtf you're talking about, or what you may think you're talking about. I wonder if you have me mixed up with another poster. I really don't care, let's go back to not talking to one another.

Not sure if you're trying to score points with people by bashing me, but it may backfire, they may actually start hating me less if they see you hating on me.

I always wondered what the urge was to make everyone hate you, and why you would post on a forum where that was the case considering the vast amount of options there are. I mean you in the universal sense, not you in particular.

My elementary school was scammed once, they got involved in a fundraiser, told us we all had to go out and sell jewelry to raise money for the school. And it was a dictated to us we had to sell a minimum dollar amount worth of jewelry or else cough up a certain amount of cash to raise funds... So in a way that scammed all of us.

I sold my WoW account back in vanilla when they used to go for hundreds of dollars. Got $600 transferred into my PayPal account. A few days later PayPal pulled the funds saying that it was a fraudulent transaction. I really didn't care about it since I wanted to stop playing but about a few months down the line I went through the process of recovering my account and got it back. Blizzard makes the security question permanent so you can always get your account back.

I can't stand school fundraisers. they are all scams, and don't tell me they are needed, that's bullshit. The small amount they make off of them is not to justify the stress and nonsense it puts the kids through - "But dad, the teacher said I have to sell these and you need to go with me. If I don't then we can't have nice things" Fundraisers are banned in my house unless it's for a specific function, like FFA or sports team.

Same goes with school pictures. Twice a year? Are you f'in kidding me. Second biggest scam in school.

That one is still really common in various forms. I constantly see similar schemes from car dealerships or time-share pitches with "EVERYBODY WINS" promos. Win $1000 shopping spree and the prizes are like $25 digital cameras with $200 prices and $40 shipping. Spend your free thousand and you get $100 worth of crapola for $300 in shipping charges.

Hmm... scammed... I dunno, I tend to be pretty savvy. I did call a psychic once, when I was like 15. But I was mostly just doing that for amusement.

In case everyone isn't already aware: there's no such thing as psychic power.

Can't remember anything else off the top of my head... other than just y'know, your standard "this item isn't as useful or well made as I had expected" - which doesn't really count.

Oh I've got a good one: I was a liberal for most of my life until recently. I'd say I got pretty damn well scammed there.

What political ideology do you identify with now? Conservative? Libertarian?

I think Alky is saying that your call to the psychic was billed to your parents.

We talked in the past? WTF!

I think liberals are some of the most self-absorbed people around. I think that most of what they believe, claim to believe, and do are all about making themselves feel like they are great, righteous people. Call me a cynic, but when some 22 year old white girl from an upper middle class family is handing out water purifiers in Pakistan to little children, I think that's all about her and her gratifying herself. The state of "oh man I am SUCH A GOOD PERSON" bliss must be nearly at overload levels in such a person's brain. Liberals are the ultimate narcissists most of the time.

You seem to blame those with money for your problems. A water purifier is an great thing to have.

Mentioning she is WHITE shows your racism.

You are trying to be the narcissist here, but you fail because we know...yes we all know.

I was already challenged to make a poll in OT about who stays or leaves. I am thinking you two talk. I don't even know off the top of my head who that challenger was.

BTW, I'd suggest you just stick to:

Most schools need money. I agree the Fund Raisers are usually scams as most schools hire the low totem poles.

I hope you at least donated to the school. They will always take a check or cash.

I've been approached several times (mostly in parking lots in the 90's) by guys in the white vans selling "$4k speakers" for $150.

I already had a good speaker setup, so it was easy to pass on, but I always wondered how they actually sounded & whether or not they were blown.

That was the only school fundraiser I can ever remember. I remember selling candy bars for little league. I still remember the school-wide assembly with the people running the fundraiser in giving us the sales pitch on how to sell the jewelry. All of us students were question each other on what was going on, all the parents hated this. In the end the school received back I don't think even a quarter of the promised percentage from the people. Some rough times with everyone pissed off throughout.

I used to pump gas in high school and a couple of guys that I worked with would run scams.

1. The oil scam. The prey would normally be moms because they don't know shit about cars. When people got gas we had to check their oil. You spot a mom and tell her she needs 2-3 quarts of oil. You pretend to put the oil in her car, and after you are done you throw the full quart of oil in the trash. When she leaves you put the oil back on the shelf. At $3.00 a pop you easily make $10-20 a day.

2. Back in the day Exxon had this deal if you paid cash you got an addition 8 cents on each gallon of gas bought. So if you got 5 gallons of gas you would get 40 cents or you could have it taken off your bill. Most people did not know about this and people were getting scammed. A few guys were making $20,30 and even 40 dollars extra from this scam.

Cool Story, Goes well with your new bad ass approach.

However, a real bad ass would have called those dudes to the floor.

The thread is about being scammed not being part of it.

I am thinking you were their gopher.

Nope. I was just working there. That was it. I didn't participate. My parents taught me better.

Actually one of the guys who was running the oil scam got caught, and he was fired on the spot.

If you have any financial income then you will or have been scammed at some point in your life even if you didn't know it.
I never been scammed out of much more than chump change. Few bucks here and there and sometimes when confronted with someone who may be a potential scammer, like donations or candy selling kids, the skeptical side of me doesn't even give a shit and I cave.

Oh and 5 hour energy shots...I keep falling for it despite the $1 ones at the dollar store do the exact same nothing as the $4 shots do.

I think it's exploitation of kids. I also think cheerleaders doing the car washes for donations bouncing up and down in bikini's is sexual exploitation but that's me.

My mom scammed me once. She ask me if she could have some of my Cookie dough Ben and Jerry ice cream, ofc I said yes. Then she said she will buy me a free tub of B&J when she goes out for her weekly shopping. 1 week later no B&G. I was mad and never spoken to my mom since. True story.
