Peter Lugers Steakhouse meal for me and my gf at the time = $140+ tip. I was about to do a mastercard " XYZ = Priceless" but that's such a cliche. It was really yummy though and I'd do it again once my financial situation improves. Don't do it every day, duh.. Treat yourself every now and then. But I once had a $60 plate of venison that made me want to gag. It's all relative...

Condense all the nutrients we need into a pill form and I would be first in line to buy them. Cooking and eating is such a waste of time. I enjoy good food and if we had meal pills, you could still have your occasional grandiose 'real' meal. But $100 meals? Sorry, not interested. Its too fleeting and too little of a difference from cheaper food.

How about adding a poll to the op...The food lovers in here that don't mind paying all this money: overweight or not?

Enjoying good food doesn't equal an overall bad diet...I'm in great shape. But I'm sure a few here have "let themselves go"

ironic that DrPizza seems to one of the few on here that can appreciate a good dining experience

seriously people, go to the website of your local city newspaper, read some restuarant reviews, pick a place, and go find out what it's like to eat at a place that isn't staffed by people wearing goofy suspenders and covered in and array of colorful pins/buttons.

Heck yeah. In fact, I eat salmon and ministone soup from Olive Garden two or three times a week for lunch... comes to about $16. Worth every penny.

For our last anniversary, I took my wife to Smith & Wollensky's steakhouse. Bill came to about $300. Again, worth every penny (not that I'd do it on a regular basis lol). Best steak I'd had in a long time.

Last night my girlfriend took me out to a restaurant. We started off with some prosciutto and some belgium cheese with a really nice dry Italian wine. (Valle Reale to be exact) Not too bad for a $36 bottle of wine. After that we both had a vinagarette and pistachio salad. I had rack of lamb on a bed of potatoes and she had salmon with a side of sweet potatoes and roasted red peppers.

The bill was $89 plus tip.... To me, it was definitely worth more than $15. The food was awesome and the wine made it even better.

I'm appalled by the lack of general food appreciation in this thread.
Off the top of my head I can think of anything from pizzas to steaks that I've paid lots of money for and it was SO worth it.
Ray's Pizza on 6th and 11th - their chicken pesto pizza is $21 of delicious
Ruth's Chris Steak House - Dropped $70 for a NY Strip, creamed spinach, some beer and it was supremely worth it (best steak I've ever had)
Peter Luger's - same as the guy above, also ridiculously worth it (2nd best steak I've ever had)
the list goes on - I remember every one of those meals, and generally every one of those nights.

Edit: And for the "poll", I'm only 5-10 lbs. overweight

wow, just wow. maybe it's because i live in the sf bay area, but i didn't realize what a food snob i am until i read this thread-- i can't believe the crap restaurants that people think are good! good food doesn't have to be expensive (i enjoy fast food just like everyone else), but at a nice restaurant you're paying just as much for the service and atmosphere as you are for the food. i routinely drop $100+ for 2 persons here.

as someone else suggested, look at food reviews in your local newspaper, or even zagat can be a useful starting point. if you don't have good restaurants where you live, budget extra dining out money for when you travel. the experience is worth it!

I truly feel sorry for you...that's no way to live life, IMO.

What kind of dumb question is this? Unless you are some person on welfare (and if you are, why are you posting on ATOT), how could anyone have *not* eaten a meal worth at least $15? Even if you are frugal, surely you've been to a wedding or someone has taken you out to lunch.

I really don't care about any meal I've eaten so much nor what I paid. As long as I'm getting the protein and nutrients that I need, that's my only concern. There are so many other things in life for me to enjoy that aren't as counter productive as eating for pleasure.

Agreed. Dinner at a shintzy chain restaurant could cost $15 where I live. Hell, McDonalds is around $7 or 8 bucks when you think about it. My favorite every day restaurant is a thai place where you can have a good meal for $20 with tax, tip, and a beer - a great deal if you ask me. $15 shouldn't be thought of as splurging, unless I have a very warped world view. A client took me and my partner out to a sushi joint. The bill for 3 people? $500 plus tax. Of course, I didn't have to pay and I didn't enjoy it since I'm not a big sushi eater, but that's my definition of splurging - not a $15 meal at TGI Fridays.

The flip side - there's a bar that gives you a free pan pizza with a drink purchace - $4 for a amstel and a pizza aint too bad
