and to pre-empt all the check your spam, deleted folder, blah blah blah folder...yeah i checked them

Perhaps, it might have been some sort of virus that eats email or this company did this to oppress your right to the email but meh!

A few years ago I had a spam/virus email get into my yahoo mail. It would send out emails and then delete all the other emails so it left no trace. Somehow it got my password and a bot would automatically do all that.

So yeah it's possible. I'd change your password and delete any old emails you can. Do a virus scan and see if a virus needs to be removed from your computer. Otherwise it will just keep getting your new passwords.

I've had that happen in gmail. Either an email will randomly show up at a time a few hours earlier, or an email will be in my inbox, then disappear. Then a little while later it'll be back again.

it is possible for the sender to retract emails, even if saved to different folders. in your situation I would be very suspect that you were "phished" and someone else now has the login and password, then they retracted the email. check your accounts and change them again.

for sensitive emails or ones that I want to keep safe, I forward a copy to another email account. As far as I know, this will stop emails from being retracted.

Retraction has to be supported on your server's side as well as the sender's. Gmail doesn't support Exchange email recalls. There is an "Undo Send" option in Gmail labs but I think it only supports up to 30 seconds.

the temp password you used worked? If so I wonder if its some type of security measure?

I know you said you did the obvious but did you actually do a search as in type in the senders info?
