Born in the UK, spent over a year in Bosnia, over two in Kosovo, over one year in Iraq and over four years in Afghanistan.

Been to quite a few other places for extended periods of time all around the world too including the US, but i suppose i have never really lived anywhere else than the UK.

I lived for almost a year (10 and a half months) in China. It was pretty sweet although I got kind of homesick near the end of that.

Born in US. Lived in Brazil for two years in my early 20's. Would go back and live for sure with my wife. A little iffy on raising a family there permanently, but would think it's awesome raising kids there for a few years if they're under the age of 10 so they could fluently learn the language.

Wow...lovely places you've lived. Let me guess, you moved around on the military plan?

I am confused, which option do I select?

Born and raised in India for 21 years, came to US for higher studies. Its been 3 years and 6 months since I left my 'home country'.. and I will be studying for a long time to come. I traveled through out the US, visited most of the major cities barring the north east, and liked it very much. I really had a different experience living in the US.. in the sense that I moved from one of the biggest cities in India(Hyderabad) to a small university town in Illinois.

Where in Kosovo and in what unit?

The USS Philippean sea. We were supporting a marine unit short on bodies. I dont even remember who they were. We took care of minor little incidental work while they were off fighting and dying. I stopped complaining after that.

I felt guilty about doing busy work while they were in combat, then I remembered that they volunteered for the marine corps and I volunteered for the Navy. And we were only there a short while so I didnt have too much time to think about it.

This was late 98, early 99 for the record. Shortly after we dropped Tomahawks all over the place. We were already in the area and a couple units needed extra people. Our captain was looking to score points with as many flag officers as he could. Guy was a serious glory hound who cared little for the men under his command. He was all too happy to volunteer some deck seaman, useless as we were.

The campaign didn't start until march in 99 (you'll have to excuse me for not knowing the date, i should really know the exact date but i'm old and tired) so it had to have been after that.

The US unit i served with at the time was the 401'st so we probably never were close to where you were at.

Like I said, early 99. Not too long after we dropped Tomahawks. I distinctly recall being in Haifa for Christmas of 98. We cut our port visit short to head out to sea and quickly went to GQ for action.

World situation was relatively calm at the time. We were expecting a mellow cruise. Our captain loved it though, meant more medals and practically guaranteed promotion. He was so excited to be the first to launch. In fact the Philippean Sea set records for most Tomahawks launched in a 24 hour period, one week, most consecutive launches, etc. That practically gave him creamed pants. The finished touch was when we got back and he was interviewed by CNN and all the local media as well.
I felt nauseous. That someone would use something so brutal and ugly and get celebrity from it. From that point on I stopped looking at the Navy as a patriotic duty to my country and just used it to further my career. I got my ESWS, and fought to get into the advanced electronics program and started working on my civilian resume. After seeing a lot of ugly shit I realized how important it was to work hard for something good, for myself. A big part of the problem with the world is too many people dont want to work hard to make newer, better things for themselves and their kids. They'd rather try force to take it from someone else who is trying to make their own lives better.

American and I have hardly even been out of the country. Just a few soccer games in Canada as a kid and a few drunken nights in Windsor. Hardly counts.

I've been living in Japan for almost 3 1/2 years now.

Although living is expensive, it's hard not to enjoy life in one of the world's most interesting cities and be paid very well to do a rewarding and non-stressful job. I can see why some people end up staying here for decades.

I'm planning to return to Canada in 2012 to start graduate school. I like Japan, but Canada is my home - it's where I want to settle down and raise a family.

I was born in America and lived for almost a year in India and Southeast Asia when I was 20-21.

In the long run it probably wasn't as valuable as an experience as I'd thought it would be. I don't know how much of that I carry with me 3-4 years later. But it was one year out of (hopefully) many in my life so I'm glad I did it, just to scratch that itch.

I think it may have taught me to be much more appreciative of what I have around me, not in a material sense but as a tourist. I would go to these places and read the guidebooks and do everything I could, but when had I ever done that at home, when there was so much to do nearby? Why was I paying $600 to fly to Thailand when I could pay $100 to fly to Alaska and do something just as crazy? The value of being abroad for the sake of being abroad was stripped away.

It would have to be a unique kind of opportunity for me to do it again. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy my experience, I just like having a home base and not being a sort of drifter.
