When I was in the Navy I was a weenie for the first year. In fact, my whole life I had been a little pussy bitch.
After about 6 months of abuse from Boatswains Mates I finally had enough. One of the other seaman, a particularly violent chap named DaSilva, pushed me too far one day and I knocked him down. Climbed on top and beat his head until his eyes went cross and I think he may have briefly lost consciousness. After that no one ever even tried to touch me ever again. Even the big guys stopped beating on me.

I changed a lot on that day. It was out of character for the old me, but help defined the new me.

That's the thing about bullies. For one, they exist at all ages and in all professions. Two, they hate resistance and a challenge.

NH in general sucks, and UNH isn't worth it at all.. I'd get out of here while you aren't tied down.

NH owns...
Unless you're in New Massachusetts, then it sucks. I agree that UNH is NOT worth it at all.

JLee, your housing/cost of living issue can be fixed easily enough. Move to Claremont. Get the hell our of Leb/Hanover/Eastman wherever you pay wicked high housing prices/taxes.

But It's all your decision. You seem to have chosen already, follow that choice.

I know lots of people in the Claremont area that commute up to Leb/hanover. They have no problem with it.

The grass always looks greener......

That being said...I'd go for it!

You can probably go back if it was a major mistake.

Yeah, I know. And you're absolutely right; I'm really approaching the now or never point also - I'm not getting anywhere unless I was content to stay where I am, collect a paycheck, and just let life happen instead of making it what I want to be (which I'm not).

It's hard to say. If I got another job in LE, I'd be right back to where I am - so it could be a while, or it could be not long at all..depends on if I'm able to get hired (no one has positions open now).

I really should just go. Maybe I'll try to get Lasik while I still have really good health insurance and then head south.

Damn, it's NH. At least, if you lived in MA (Boston), you'd have good benefits and not just the drawbacks of being in NE.

Go where you want to go. If there's nothing stopping you, you're just wasting time when you could be enjoying life.

After learning that it will cost me an extra $16,000 for two years of school at UNH vs UF, I'm seriously considering selling my extra stuff and moving back to Gainesville FL. I still have a substantial network of people down there, and have absolutely no doubt that I could find a job within a week. The problem is that it would likely pay half of what I make now. Granted, cost of living is way less, so that's not as much of an issue, but still.

I have nothing tying me down where I am, and the only reason I'm there is because I have a job. I don't like my job (I like what I do, but without going into detail I am far from happy where I am), I don't like the area, and housing costs are insane.

That said, it's still really hard for me to just pack up and go like that...it goes completely against how I usually do things.

Still, I'm really tempted to just go. I know I can make it work, but it's tough leaving my comfort zone like that.

Has anyone done something like this before? And does anyone want a truck or a snowmobile?

you're quitting life as a cop?

I've done it many times in my life...but since it WAS my life, it wasn't really out of character. I used to have to pack up and go to the next construction job...often a couple thousand miles away. (my wife used to hate it when I came home and told her, "I drug up today, let's get packing. I have to be on the next job (usually 500+ miles away) on Monday."

Perhaps the biggest "change" was when I quit a comfortable job with one of the local electrical utilities to go back to construction. Granted, I got an immediate 30% raise when I did so, but it definitely took me outside the current comfort zone. (ah fuck...back on the road.)

It was 88 in NH today, and last summer I was constantly bitching about the humidity (I saw days of 99% and even one at 100%, which I wasn't sure was possible ). I hate the heat in FL less than I hate NH's cold in winter, so even that's a win-win trade-off.

I was in Gainesville over the weekend and remembered how much I like it there..I'm in SC now (driving back north) and I really didn't want to go.

Moving from NH to Fladah isn't really gonna help you much for summer heat and humidity, but yes, winters should be more comfortable.

I thought you were set on moving to Arizona a while back? Hot as hell, but usually VERY LOW humidity. Not sure if the various police agencies are currently hiring, (the city and county here are laying off cops due to budget problems) but hey...a nice side benefit is that you'd get to hassle illegal immigrants...or those who LOOK like illegals. (where do I sign up?)

That's pretty much my point, though- comparing summers, FL is definitely worse. Comparing winters, NH is wayyyy definitely worse.

I was planning on AZ, yes- I tested for Scottsdale PD and applied for Tempe PD. I didn't make Scottsdale and Tempe is no longer hiring. I also checked ASU's tuition and it was insane. I want to go back to school too, so that's a factor.

The grass always looks greener......

I've lived in both places already.

No- Gainesville PD may be hiring this fall, but they won't know 'till the budget comes out. I checked UF PD, Santa Fe College PD, and Alachua County Sheriff's and none of them are hiring now either. I would try to get on as a reserve somewhere so at least I maintain certification.

You selling a snowmobile?

If I move, I will. It's a 2000 Yamaha VMax 700 Triple Deluxe - had a buddy of mine (snowmobile mechanic) go through it over the winter. It's all ready to go, even had the frame welded up where they typically crack.

Compression was 160 on the nose on all three cylinders- sled has 8K and change (I want to say 8600-8800 but I'm not sure). Electric start, new battery, handwarmers, heated shield plug, and maybe a 12v accessory plug..can't remember.

Follow your heart jlee

It's not leading me anywhere except "out"..

out of the closet, jlee?!

Anyway, have I ever made a significant life decision that was out of character? Well, damn. I can't say I know what my character really is so that's kinda hard to say. I haven't made a single life decision out of character yet... I kinda go by this:

If I ain't winning, no point in trying. (I did this with baseball since I realized it's all about politics and not actual skill when it comes to who actually plays what position... This is true at the level I played and a bit ahead. Obviously once you get into big schools with realistic tryouts it changes...)

Look at it this way, if you move to FL you can work in joint task force with Dexter at miami forensics. and you can hook up with Jennifer Carpenter.
