Have you ever read the Bible?

Just wondering if those who bash religious people have even tried to understand things, or to read the books (Bible, Koran, whatever) etc.

And why do people on here seem to bash religious types a lot? It's not like they are hurting you. I would say the majority are nice, hlepful folks. Who cares what they believe in. I can understand those who try to force something on you, but in my experience, most don't do that.

I guess I just don't get all the hatred I see here for those who happen to believe in a religion.

Too much cake, not enough pie. The Bible mentions cake eleven times but omits any mention of pie. Do we need more reason?

Today at least the troll level seems to be down (other than the vocal few who consider it their civic duty). However, the more religion threads we have, the more likely the troll level is to rise.

Yes, read every word of both the OT and NT. That's the only way to truly understand it which leads to the loathing and scorn of anyone that believes in it. The only possible way to believe in that load of tripe is not to have read it or understood it.

since when does liberal mean anti-christian?

Actually, I've yet to see many of the bible-thumping fundies, who are overwhelmingly conservative, act like real Christians.

Falwell, Robertson? These guys are as far from Christian as you can get. Fortunately, Falwell is sucking dirt and getting burned in whatever hell he lives in; too bad his hateful venom lives on up here though....

Definitely some great stories about slavery, rape, and murder. The parts about god are kind of weird but other then that it's entertaining.

I stick with non-fiction these days though. There are so many good true stories.

Read parts of it. My first year in college was at a catholic university (and no, I am not catholic) and I took 2 old testament classes (read, analyze and interpret). They were tough since it was taught by a nun who didn't like me because I was/am a hethen or some nonesense..

And I don't bash peoples religious choices. To each their own as long as the view is not force fed to me. I don't like people trying to force religious views on me (or others).

I know man.
Those that push for open-mindedness are generally the least open-minded.

*yeah I should probably read the Koran sometime -- scary stuff

you are right that liberalism doesn't mean anti-Christian, just that seems that there are ppl who think anything Christian is conservative and anything anti-Christian is liberal

Edit: and in the political world I like moderation. I prefer a leader who's not extremely conservative nor overly liberal

I tried to read the whole thing but it was becoming too much like Lord of the Rings so I put it down.

I read some of it, but I don't really like to read, so I've never sat down and read it all or anything to that effect.

again: so then why do you perpetuate the stereotype? Your original statement specifically implies that liberal = bible-hater.

EDIT: using my own example, I think the reason this label comes about is because hateful dipshits like Falwell and Robertson declare themselves Christian, and liberals to be the enemy. Not only do they place liberals as anti-Christian, but their are a lot of people who legitimately despise these people. Most of them liberal, sure, but they despise them for their vitriolic beliefs--not because of Christianity, but because they are evil, hateful pieces of shit.

Liberals attack these people because they are social misfits attempting to destroy the fabric of our free country. Liberals don't attack them because they espouse a particular religion.

So when at a big dinner and the speaker says "let us pray" and everyone bows their head, what are you thinking/doing?

Well, that all depends on the situation. When I go to my aunt and uncles for thanksgiving, I usually look around the table to see who is in fact bowing their head. As to what I am thinking at that time? Whatever I happen to be thinking. Maybe how crappy the food looks? How I'd like another beer, but they don't have any because none of them drink and they suck? No idea until the situation arrives.
It doesn't mean I am not religious. Had my daughter baptised a few months ago. Went to the same church I was baptised/confirmed/married in.

I've read various versions of the Bible and Apocrypha, Qu'ran, Bhagavad Gita, and the Pentateuch. No comment on my personal beliefs.
