Have you ever withdrawn from a university course?

I am considering dropping one of my courses in university this year (I am a first year student). It's a non major related course, and I would still have enough credits to continue to second year. Does anyone have any opinions?

I fear that the one course will drag my GPA down a lot, because the teacher is a first year teacher and he has done a very bad job teaching the material. I feel doomed for that exam, and if I focus my energy on that it may hinder my progress in my other subjects.

What are the downsides for withdrawing from a course after the add/drop date?

No real downsides. This isn't high school, its college. You decide your life from now on. That being said I've dropped completely from a school (gave up a full ride) and i've also dropped from individual classes. The conselours dont even really care.

Does it affect any masters prospects or anything like that? Assuming you only did it once in your whole university career? It wouldn't be a habitual thing.

No. If I dropped a class I'd drop below 12 credits and would no longer be considered a full time student. I would then lose my scholarship.

Lots of times..but I'm still on pace to be over the required graduation units after my first quarter of my 4th year even while taking the minimum amount of classes.

You'll have a W on your transcript, but that's a pretty meaningless thing.

First year teachers tend to know that they're not performing up to par and will curve GENEROUSLY - unless they've already stated that there won't be a curve.

If you don't think you are going to do well, then I advise you to just drop the class. Of course, my best advice is to speak to a counselor at your college, especially if the deadline for dropping classes is over.

Being as I really like music, I took a music theory class thinking it would be easy, but dropped it after the first day, when the teacher started talking about all the research papers and oral reports we were gonna be doing.

My accounting class started out with probably 80+ students. By the end of the semester, there were about 10 of us left.

I dropped 2 classes throughout my college career. We were allowed to drop up to 15 credits over the entire course of our undergraduate schooling, and i used up 4 on the 2 classes. There is no point failing a class if you can widthdraw and take it again unless it affects your student status (full time v. part time, which can affect scholarships and loans).

drop it, fail it, disappear to mexico for seven weeks and live in a cave in a halucinogenic haze. Doesn't really matter, because no matter what you do, you will still be posting on ATOT, and ATOT will always love you.
