Video of her reportedly approaching a white student who had dreadlocks, accusing him of cultural appropriation and telling him to remove them or she would cut them off. Then she physically restrains him and prevents him from leaving until she notices a camera and then she accuses him of accosting her.

I can't speak for the authenticity of the video but it's been circulating. Now there is a petition to get her expelled from school (the whole: if this were a white man doing this to a black person blah blah blah).

It's always interesting to see events like this unfold. Is this affirmative action in action?

Video

Moved from OT.

OP, your predilection for creating and promoting temptingly incendiary, race-based topics in OT, when, if they belong anywhere at all, belong most properly in P&N, is duly noted.

Yes I've seen it and talking about it here will only lead to someone getting banned.

I see she is pulling the old "don't out your hands on me", while simultaneously forcing his hands on me, routine.

Medical advancements aren't cultural, they're economic, built on the backs of hundreds of years of slaves. White culture is mayo and NASCAR. Everyone knows this.

The white kid's hand gestures were annoying. But she was completely in the wrong.

And yet, the sky hasn't fallen. Slap her wrist, move on with life.

It's a hoax. Reposted many times on LL the past few days. The bad acting should have given that away...

I can believe that. If it's not, "cultural appropriation", really? Wikipedia certainly isn't authoritative but here's the first paragraph from the CA entry.

Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture.[1] Cultural appropriation is seen by some[2] as controversial, notably when elements of a minority culture are used by members of the cultural majority; this is seen as wrongfully oppressing the minority culture or stripping it of its group identity and intellectual property rights.[3][4][5][6] This view of cultural appropriation is sometimes termed "cultural misappropriation."[3][6] According to authors in the field, cultural (mis)appropriation differs from acculturation or assimilation in that the "appropriation" or "misappropriation" refers to the adoption of these cultural elements in a colonial manner: elements are copied from a minority culture by members of the dominant culture, and these elements are used outside of their original cultural context—sometimes even against the expressed, stated wishes of representatives of the originating culture.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
That is some serious bullshit. First, no racial or ethnic group is monolithic so how can you do anything "against the expressed" wishes of a group.

I can see if something is considered demeaning in some way. Then you might have an argument. But that's not CA. That's being a dick.

here is a more well argued point about cultural appropriation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1KJRRSB_XA

Was that even an argument? Let's see...

1. Black people's hair takes more upkeep than white people's hair
2. Black people therefore have more diverse hairstyles
3. Black people invented hip-hop, cornrows, and twerking
4. White people found success by taking after hip-hop, cornrows, and twerking from black people
5. Cryy 4 Trayvon he was a good boy :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( , #blacklivesmatter
6. Black hip-hop woman uses "Igloo" as an insult towards a white hip-hop woman for not caring about how #blacklivesmatter
Therefore...

Oh, wait, she actually made a coherent argument in the very last minute, she should have cut out all that irrelevant bullshit in the beginning. I can agree with the idea that "cultural reappropriation" can be insulting, but still, lol. Having frizzy hair is now a part of "black struggle"? Or having a large shakable butt? I'm wondering how much she cares about black lives when she focuses only on a few white-on-black cases of violence and apparently doesn't care at all about the rampant black-on-black violence that exists.

A YouTube commentator's take on the black-people-with-straightened-hair thing:

And you clearly missed the point. Her hair being straighten is quite different. White people's hair does not require being straightened to grow healthily. It is just a form of styling your hair there a white people with curly hair to. When black people braid their hair most of the time it's how we maintain it, keep it healthy and grow it. We can't not braid our hair, it is very necessary for our hair to grow and that makes it part of black culture. She is saying that it is cultural appropriation if you do things like this and think it's cool but then reject it when it's on black people. When black people braid their hair they are seen as ghetto and rejected by the white people regardless of how neat it may look or the fact that it is a necessity but when it's the other way round it is viewed as edgy, cool and fun. just take a look at the article of the girl who was reject at her job because she has braids and its against their policy. How is that fair? when thats how she maintains her hair. Its like me turning someone down for having silky straight hair. Also Kylie Jenner is someone who mostly has black friends and clearly likes or enjoys black culture but you never see them speak up when there are real issues concerning black culture. They feel it's not their concern because they aren't black but then it's ok to do all those other things. Being pro black does not mean anti white. You may not fully understand our struggles but you can at least empathise or raise awareness to them. But to ignore it and think that's acceptable is just annoying as hell.

Lucid.
