Have you installed SP2? If so, is your firewall on by default?

To anyone that's installed Service Pack 2. Can you tell me, if you didn't modify anything, if the built in firewall was turned on by default?

Been using the public beta for a while now, just got the windows update RTM this morning. it was still on after the update.

Systems that ship with Windows XP (and SP2) will now have the firewall on by default. SP2 will enable the Windows Firewall by default when installed.

Microsoft considered having it on by default when shipping Windows XP back in 2001, but was worried it would cause to many tech support calls. But they've since realized having it on would have prevented the spread of the majority of the worms that affected XP in the last two years.

It wont be on Windows Update until August 24th. It is currently being pushed out to computers running beta versions of SP2 via Automatic Updates.

Starting next week, computers running XP Gold or SP1 will start getting SP2 through AU.

It was a phased launch and beta users got it yesterday, everybody else gets it the Monday the 16th.

Not necessarily. The number of downloads will be limited until it hits Windows Update.
