I'm running without root for. .. well probably the first time since I got an Android phone.

My banks app won't run on a rooted phone and it's a great app. Can check all my balances (including my credit card), transfer money, pay bills, pull up statments. It's great.
Huh. Never heard of this. Care to share which bank this is? All my bank apps have worked fine on every ROM I've tried.

Yes, but just to use a few apps that require it. Stock rom is plenty fast for me right now, I'll install a custom one in a few months so I can enjoy the speed bump more.

Well, let me ask the same question that I asked about Nexus 7 since we're talking about rooting: How do I root Nexus 4 without custom recovery? I don't want custom recoveries but want to install apps that require/benefit from root access.

I did consider rooting then uninstalling any stuff I don't want then unrooting but it's just too much hassle and I can disable 90% of the stuff I don't use anyway.

I sort of miss custom kernels, there were a couple of great ones for the SGS3, but I just don't want to give that app up.
Find another bank?
Almost all the bank apps I've tried here(USA) have those features without blocking one from having root. Those features are nothing special.

I almost can't ever imagine myself not having root.

I still haven't bothered to root my Verizon SGS3. It works so well I just haven't seen the need, especially since JB OTA. (And no, I find the Verizon bloat to be a bother, or even difficult to avoid altogether.) I may root/ROM it for kicks eventually, but not sure I'll really bother since I plan to sell it soon in favor of a Note 2.

I would rather not root, but if you own a phone on VZW, the only way you can get updates within a year of anyone else is by rooting and doing it yourself. My wife has my old Galaxy Fascinate running 4.2 and it's definitely extended the life of the phone. I have my GNex on 4.2 as well.

I root because I can...
I think Google Wallet complained about me being rooted, but since I never use it....

There are apps that let you temporarily unroot Android devices. That's how I got OTA updates and use Google Wallets on my Nexus 7. (Though after setting up an app specific password in my Google account Google Wallet works fine with root)

Would you mind mentioning such apps, or are they device specific?

Yes that's what I use. SuperSU Pro (paid version) also does it.

Short answer, no! It does everything I need as is.

Well, root seems worthwhile just for blocking ads and home-phoning apps for me. It's just that I am too new to Android and finally got off the carrier hook, I don't want no trouble with my brand new phone.

Having said that, I am enjoying the full control of hardware that root provides on my tablet.

Yes, once it was out of warranty, I rooted my Atrix 2. Got rid of most of the Moto/AT&T bloat that ICS loves to run in the background. May end up trying a custom ROM at some point.

I've rooted and romed all of my past Android phones but haven't felt the need to do so on my SGS3 so far.
