yeah they have one i Rockford all the time. they are "Omaha steaks*". * as in the steaks come from Omaha and not the omaha steak brand.

but fuck 20 ribeye's for $20? It's always a temptation to get them. One year a buddy of mine did and said they were paper thin and tiny.

so basically $5/lb after accounting for water.

for that same $5/lb, kroger is selling bone in select ribeyes, and HEB is selling choice strip steak.

Evidently people with lower standards love them.

Norman is a former resident of Omaha, Neb., and said he used to live a few miles from the plant where the meats are packaged. Norman said he has always been satisfied with the product and has never had a complaint with the company.

Brandon Harkleroad of Abilene is also a repeat customer. He said the steaks in the 20 rib eyes for $20 promotion are perfect breakfast steaks.

"I came in Thursday and purchased a case of variety steaks, and we grilled them out that night," Harkleroad said. "Everything was great."

Yeah, that means he probably didn't live in a particularly nice part of town...

Why do they put maltodextrin in those? People don't need sugar in their meat.

wow..

5lbs of ribeye for $20 not a good deal.

I love me a ribeye with eggs every now and then. I buy steaks in bulk some of them are kinda small so perfect for breakfast.

The pic may be too blurry to really tell, but

And tenderizers? No thanks. Chemicals that soften muscle should not be consumed.

We have an Iowa steaks around the corner from my shop and I managed to avoid them for a long time, but got taken on a box steaks for $20. I tried cooking one of them and noticed it had an odd, but not necessarily going bad smell, well one bite of that nasty shoe leather was enough to throw the rest of the steaks away, and it really isn't cheaper then catching steak on sale at the grocery store.

Pretty much this.

Even for a breakfast steak you could do much better at a market.

We had guys around 25 years ago came around the apartment complex at one time I was in selling steaks door to door. They were a bit larger, but last time I did that, they weren't worth it.

Bought 5 I think, those weren't too bad but still not worth it.

I wonder if the cut of meat actually qualifies as "ribeye."

Technically it does. I work in this industry, what they are doing is buying "utility" grade meat, (usually old heffers that are producing very low amounts of milk), injecting it with a tenderizing agent along with water then freezing it almost solid and slicing it on a deli-style slicer or a band-saw with a boneless blade installed. The marinade is trying to mask the fact that the meat will naturally taste like crap, don't bother with the $1 steak, it's not worth it.

Not all are bad, Papain and Bromelain extracts form pineapple that help break down the proteins of the meat. Aldoph's uses them and I marinate London broil with it, works great on the tougher cuts.
