Anyone else find this? Be it desktops or laptops, I constantly find myself switching usb ports because my hard drive or memory card reader isn't being recognized in the first port I choose. I just plugged a 2.0 hard drive into one of my main computers back 2.0 port and it wouldn't properly initialize (Pulsing hd light, I plugged it in a couple times). I moved to the second port which was actually part of the same jack, and it works fine! wtf!

do you have a motherboard that has a third party usb controller for additional ports?

my gigabyte z68 motherboard has 2 usb 3.0 ports that are on a separate controller, not managed by the intel z68 south bridge. it's noticeably buggier when i plug some things into it.

I have always hated USB.

Sometimes it is a Gigabyte or other 'bonus' controller, sometimes a loose cable/header, sometimes it the the device manufacturer who cheaps out, etc.

How many versions of USB are there?

well, the reason why there was a third party controller on the z68 was because usb 3 was pretty new at the time and z68 didn't incorporate it into the controller yet. instead of just having only usb 2 ports gigabyte was nice enough to put two buggy but usable usb 3.0 ports w/ an "etron" controller. it's not the best, but it's certainly better than some other third party add ins like the crappy jmicron sata 3 controllers that were on alot of the LGA775 boards...

No idea how material it is, but when you plug a device into a USB socket the driver gets associated with that socket so moving it to another can install another driver instance that may differ from the first.

Some USB sockets seem to have more power than others too.

Didn't some USB crash the system during a big Bill Gates demo?
