Having a Hard Time!

Hey guys, currently having a dilemma with my upcoming build. I keep bouncing around on what to buy with my GPU. Here is what I have looked at and put into my cart at some point or another.

Geforce 460GTX ( Galaxy version about 140$ )
Geforce 550GTX ti ( think it was a 130$ version )
Sapphire Radeon 5770 ( 60$ version )
Radeon 6770 ( think its 140? $ )
Geforce 260GTX ( amazon has some for 110$ or so )

Out of those which would be the best money choice? Is there anything not on the list that is around as good for about 100$?

of those, at those prices, either the 5770 or the 460GTX.

-550 only has 192 shaders compared to the 460's 336. And the latter can be overclocked to around it's same clock speed if you don't mind hot, noisy power draw.
-6770 is the very very nearly the same as a 5770 but more than twice the cost. wtf there, really.
-260GTX is old hat by now. Too much money for not enough technology.

So, of the two winners, 5770 is arguably the better value (great deal @ 60$). But if you enjoy playing with higher (highest?) settings, the 460 is a considerably more powerful card, whilst still being a very solid value.

100% agree with Plimogz on all of his points. You can find a 460 on sale for really cheap some times, just watch out for the SE version; it has a significantly cut down core.

What could an i5 2400 and a Radeon 5770 handle game wise?

The monitor I currently have in the cart is recommended at 1440 x 900 resolution.

The main, upcoming, games I want to play are, of course Skyrim and Diablo III. Not too interested in anything else. Could that combo handle those games at relatively high levels at that resolution?

Also, what would the power draw be? Could I be safe with this combo and a 450w supply?

And if I do actually go with the 460gtx and the i5 2400, what would that supply be?

So basically right now if the 5770 will not limit me too much gaming wise I will go with it for now just to keep the build cost down.

Here is the link for the 5770.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102874

And it is 50$ AR.

lol god knows how many times I looked at that dumb thing and thought it said 5770 for some reason.

There goes that plan!

Yeah 5770's are 120$ it looks like.

Which is better a GTX 550 or a 5770?

I'd say you can expect piss-poor gaming performance on that 5570. It's not a 5770, which would perfom much better.

I'd say if you plan on playing modern games like Skyrim @ 1440x900 with some candy, best to get the 460 for $130. That is a really good value deal.

I would look at either a 6850 or gtx 460 1gb (newegg links). Both are $130 after rebate with free shipping ($160 before rebate). They're pretty close in performance. At 1440x900 either card would be more than adequate and be able to keep you going for a few years yet.

Regarding a power supply, you can get a good unit like this Corsair cx500 for $60 (again, free shipping). You could probably go cheaper, but there's a pretty big drop off in quality for a savings of maybe $20.

Yeah it looks like that will be the way to go for me. Thanks for the help. Sorry about the 5770 thing lol. Don't ask me, I have no idea how I skipped over it.

Main reason for the inking out every penny is due to the budget I have. Trying to keep this entire build around 700$ with a monitor and the OS. But even getting Home Premium at 100$ will force the build into the 750's.

So, thanks to Microsoft's insane OS prices I have been trimming fat and going backwards on my build for the past week or so.

I will start buying the parts this Friday, so now its just time to finalize everything.

Right now the build is ....

lol. Alright scratch that then. Any power supply with a several page disclaimer will not be bought by me. Weird though how it is a 5 egg product on Newegg.

sorry. my advice is based on a 2007 review. and the model in your cart is obviously a revised model. I don't know if they changed anything important, like say making it less prone to spontaneous combustion, but at least they did put in a bigger fan... So I'm going to query google a little more here

Anyway. My advice is at best unsupported. at worse bad. please take it with a grain of salt for the moment.

Pardon me, but I just came over from General Hardware where I've been critiquing builds, and I just had to make some suggestions on yours. First, look for combos...

COOLER MASTER case + Windows Home Premium - $5

Do you need 8GB RAM with your processor, or will 4GB do?

You have no use for an H67 if you're not getting an SSD. (And you're not at your price range.) Get this $65 H61 if you want to splurge on USB 3.0 support, or this $50 H61 if you just want a basic board with USB 2.0.

I'll let Plimogz's PSU retraction stand. I really wish you had the money for a better ($50 AP) drive.

Thanks again. Will 430w be sufficient enough for this current build? I actually got a few leads on Craigslist for some cheaper used monitors that look decent enough. Never used Craigslist though.

Will it being Micro ATX mess anything up? I just dont want to mess around with the motherboard and just get something that allows me to upgrade in the future. Dont want to have to replace a motherboard anytime soon as that is alot harder then changing out a GPU or HDD.

430W will be plenty. for whatever build you come up with. with power to spare for additions or upgrades down the line. within reason, of course.

with only 28 amps, there will not be very much room to spare with a gtx460. any significant overclocking on that gtx460 and he is close to the limit.

lol.

Then the 500w would be the best way to go? Already got one in the cart now. The one suggested above.

I could save plenty of dough going with a H61 micro atx motherboard but I just get jittery going cheap on a motherboard. Or what seems like cheap. Last thing I want is to build this thing and then have a motherboard problem within a year.

Yeap. Either of those 2. If power consumption is a concern, and it should be with a 450W PSU, the 6850 uses less power. The 500W Corsair Ghiedo27 linked to would be fine though for either one.

Edit: Lifetime warranty on the 6850 is a plus.
