My fiancee and I found out today that we won't be able to have children. Even a surrogate is out of the question.:| A big surprise for us both. I won't go into details. Since this threw a monkey wrench into our plans for the future. I came here to ask if any of you are married and don't have kids and don't plan to. We plan to travel and have a puppy. Well at least these are our preliminary plans. What did you do to fill that gap?

THere's always adoption if you want kids. Some couples just don't want them so it's really up to you.

And if you say why you can't have them, her issues, your issues, mystery issues, etc, there are tons of new, experimental things that could be tried but they are really expensive.

Nothing wrong with being married and not having children. I know a lot of people may think it's strange, but it's more common than you think. If you decide you guys are ready for a family sometime in the future, there's always adoption.

Spend some time around the candy aisle or video game section of walmart. You'll get over the urge to have kids quickly, it works for me every time.

But seriously, I've been married going on 8 years and we don't have kids. Just not something we feel ready for and it hasn't been a priority. We may never have kids. I'm not worried about it either way. Our dog and cat are our only babies for now.

Kids are way overrated. All you have to do is peruse this forum on a regular basis to come to the same conclusion. We keep ruining our future generations with coddling and overprotection so I don't see much changing anytime soon. Rejoice in your newfound future freedom and financial windfall.

Nohr, besides your pets what else do you do in your "childfree" time. I understand this can be seen as a blessing and a curse. We never even put much thought into what we would do without the possibility of having kids. We aren't really career people either, we put life first career 2nd. Travel seems to be the most attractive course.

We spend a fair amount of time with friends. Having a hobby can help pass the time also. I don't travel often but that's a great way for couples enjoy each other.

I'm a Dad of 3, but I can easily, honestly see how much different my life would be without children. It changes the nature of your relationship utterly, and neither is better or worse, just different.

You are being given an opportunity to love each other without distraction, and should endeavor to do so.

I'm sorry that you don't have a choice in the matter any more.

Travel is a great option. Most married couples without kids that I know spend a lot more time traveling than I ever get to. Or rather, they get to go to a lot more "exotic" locations. Traveling with kids sort of sets some limits on where you get to go. Your choices become places that have things that will also amuse the kids. I absolutely loved theme parks, but I went through a streak of about 7 or 8 years without going on the major rides... instead, the time was spent in the little kids section. And, I didn't want to ride along (nor did my wife want to ride alone, and leaving the kids with a stranger really doesn't seem like a great idea.) The month my son hit the minimum height for the big kids rides, I dragged him on kicking and screaming. (He fell in love with those rides quite quickly though.)

I never want kids, although i do want to get married. I hate kids and always have. I am also a firm believer in the fact that the world is overpopulated and the more people there are running around, the worse off the world is. Global overpopulation is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to address. Im addressing it and I stand firmly behind the idea that no kids is a step in the right direction.

Generalising makes you look retarded.

Any time my SO thinks about having kids she goes to see her nieces and nephews.

That solves that.

To the OP... Get a dog. Take all the money you would have spent on diapers and retire at 40. If you really really really really still want kids, adopt.

people who follow fads and some trends are fickle and will reget it later in life especially when you have no grandkids.

My mother and step-father-in-law adopted two homeless half sisters and everything has gone pretty well. I'd say try to become foster parents. Kinda weird but you get to try on being parents. just an idea.

Adopt, or live without kids. My wife and I are very good friends with a couple, who chose not to have kids. They are well adjusted, and both have careers. Given their lifestyle, it's probably for the best. We have gatherings and they enjoy other people's kids, but the nice part is, when the party is over, everyone goes home...even the kids. Not a bad way to live, actually.

So, which one of you is shooting blanks?

Travel would be the biggest thing. No way your home life will be 100th as interesting as it would be with kids, but you have freedom and money to travel. I would do 3-4 big trips every two years outside the country and regular weekend adventures to local places.

Oh, and driving sporty two-seater cars.

And buying a smaller place closer to downtown.

Going snowboarding every weekend in the Winter.

Season tickets to your favorite sports team.

Going to concerts once a month.

Whether you have kids or you don't have kids, the key is making the most of it.
