ok so im trying to connect to the internet.

i have a p35c-ds3r from gigabyte.
the integrated nic card is a "realtekrtl8168/8111 pci-e card gigabit ethernet NIC #2" (the exact thing it says under network connections)

this is the ONLY thing that shows up under network connections.
my cable is connected to a router (which works) which connects to a modem (which works).
the cable has been tested with another computer, it works as well.

basically, the problem HAS to be the hardware inside my pc, and nowhere else.
ive updated to the latest drivers (from like 2005).
any suggestions, im getting quite irritated.

on a side note, shouldnt there be more then 1 icon by default? (in network connections). cuz i only have one. the interesting thing is that the computer doesnt even detect me plugging the cable in. ("network cable is unplugged").

thanks

edits:
1) conecting the modem directly to the computer doesnt work either. but since the modem and the cable both work, the only problem can be the computer itself.

in addition, is there anyway to rollback everything having to do with my network connections?
i may have made changes i dont know about, and if i can get a clean slate (like when xp was just installed) thatd be nice.

Summary:
xp sp2.
mobo: p35c-ds3r
ethernet card: realtek rtl8168/8111
drivers are installed properly (appears in device manager).
cable works
modem works
router works

when i plug in the working cable into my computer it doesnt even recognize that fact. it still says it is unplugged.

open the command prompt and try this
ping 127.0.0.1
if you get a reply back then try the following
in the command prompt type in ipconfig /all

and reply back with the info.

if the above don't work unistall your network card drivers and reinstall them.

ok i did that. all 4 were sent (no packets lost).
this is what it says in ipconfig - all
Windows IP Configuration

Host Name... Hal
Primary Dns Suffx...<nothing>
Node Type...Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled...No
WINS Proxy Enabled...No

Ethernet Adapter local area connection 4:
Media State...Media disconnected
Description...Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC#2
Physical Address...00-1A-4D-4B-CD-DC

i should also note the following:
in network connections it ONLY shows local area network (which is "disconnected")
i went through microsoft's entire article on bringing the other icons back, but it did not work.
ive removed and reinstalled and reenabled the ethenret card like 15 times now.

thanks for the response. i think i editted late but, unforunately i only have 1 icon in network connections, and its the lan one. i need the others, but microsoft's fix doesnt do it.
do you think doing an xp repair would work? and if i have xp sp2, wuld i have to reinstall sp2?

Well atleast you know the tcp/ip stack is ok .
Oh ya by other ccnnection icons what do you mean ?

Edit

I'm off to bed so here's all i can think of.

Use ipconfig /renew to get a new ip addresss
Also try assigning a static ip adress by instead ?
Goodluck.

in network connection right click the lan one and select properties and look for anything to do with IPv6 and untick then reboot..
