Every time I push the power button my computer goes on for a millisecond and then goes immediately off.. the only solution I've found to this is to reinstall my ram stick back into its slot and then press the power button but then I have to do the whole thing over again after I shut down... What is going on? I'm afraid I'm killing my motherboard or something each time I do this and it's a pain in the ass so please help me out. My specs are:

DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra - D + AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Combo from Monarch
(I reapplied thermal with AS5 and replaced hsf with Thermalright XP-90 + Panaflo L1BX)
Fortron AX500-A 'Blue Storm'
OCZ4001024WV3DC-K 'Value VX'
Antec SLK3000B

and some old parts from my old computer until I get new ones from zzf:

Western Digital 40GB Caviar 2MB Buffer
PNY GeForce FX5200 PCI
Some old Dell monitor
2x CD-ROM Drives
One unconnected floppy because of the lack of 4 pin peripheral slidey thingy connectors... only have one for the motherboard

Thanks in advance...

After a power down you have to pull and reinsert your ram to get it to power on? It sound like something is shorting and the ps shuts down to protect the comp. Have you tried different ram slots? You might try blowing the ram slots out with compressed air.

Is there a seperate power switch in the back of the ps? Occasionally after I fiddle with the innards of my pc my comp wont power on via the front switch, holding it down and cycling the power swith in the back snaps it out of its funk. Ive never figured out why. But its only done that a few times in the last 2 years.

Is the comp properly grounded via a good 3 prong outlet?

Power switch may be shorted out. Try unplugging the power switch and just turning the computer on by shorting the power switch pins on the mobo with a screw driver, or else plug the reset switch into the power switch header and use the reset for power.

Another possibility is that the mobo itself is shutting down the computer to protect itself from damage. Possibly bad PSU or CPU fan not connected. Do you have a spare PSU you can try?

The mobo may also be dying. Seen a LOT of bad capacitors lately, I'm afraid. I think we're in for another rash of bad caps. More info on what to look for here: http://cquirke.mvps.org/badcaps.htm

I don't think there's any problem with the mobo... and what do you mean by grounding with the 3 prong outlet?

If the mobo was dying wouldn't I not be able to fully turn on the computer at all? I'm writing with the comp as we speak. I've also tried using those two switches dfi supply you with that turn on and reset with the motherboard but i come across the same problem.

I've also noticed that if I take out the plug from my power supply and put it back in it'll also turn on.

When mobo's die they don't just break. They act weird. When processors die, they just stop working. But not mobos, they'll screw with you for weeks first. Same thing with power supplies. I would say it's your PSU or your mobo that's to blame. There's the side chance that it's your RAM, but less likely.

So here's the situation. When you turn off your computer, the PSU supplies some voltage to the computer still. If you pull the RAM, it cuts that voltage, same as when you pull the plug from the wall.

So either your PSU is having trouble coming back up to full power, or your mobo isn't asking for the right voltage after it goes to standby mode or whatever that's called.

make sure the ram is being recognized and the slot is not dirty. it will check the ram first, and if there is an error it might shut off. weird.

That sounds logical. So what should I do to fix the problem? Thanks alot for the help.
