Hawking A/P Doorstop?

I reset my Hawking HWA54G revM A/P recently and I'm finding that I'm unable to enter the advanced configuration. Basically after a reset you use their utility to set an IP, Subnet and DNS. I'm trying to set it up with settings of 192.168.1.8, 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.1.1.

After entering these settings the device is supposed to login to the IP you gave the device and then allow you go to advanced set-up options. This is where I'm going to enter the WEP security, etc to allow the A/P to access my wireless router.

Unfortunately, after I enter my initial IP adress, subnet and dns, the PC attached to the A/P cannot login to the A/P. Even if I begin with a fresh A/P reset and try to access the default IP of 192.168.1.240 it doesn't let me login.

Does this mean the A/P is fried?

The AP has to be on the same subnet as the Router.

After reset, attach the AP by it self to a computer using crossover cable. Set the computer to obtain IP auto, and use the browser to connect to the AP. After you configure the core IP to match the one of the Router, and disable the DHCP on the AP, you can reconnect it to the Router.

This was written for a Wireless Router but the same principle applies to an AP, Using a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Switch with an Access Point

I think I basically accomplished all of this.

I reset the AP, connected it to the PC(not sure about the crossover cable thing, is that a different type of ethernet cable? I'm using the short ethernet cable that came with the AP), PC was set on auto IP. I try to login using the default IP address and the AP won't provide a login screen. I try to change the IP, subnet and DNS using the included CD software and it seems to happen but just when the software opens a browser to the new IP address it never completes the connection and request a login.

If it possible that my PC is not obtaining an IP from the AP so it can't change the IP, Subnet and DNS? The autoconguration software does show the AP as being detected and it does SEEM to change the IP but the result doesn't look like it is working.

eh, should your AP provide IP addresses?

is this an AP? Or a router?

This is an AP and I wasn't trying to obtain an IP from it. I'm actually trying to give it an IP but it doesn't seem to want to take it. I'm almost at the point where I consider this a brick.

At this point I've reset the unit and tried to access it with a laptop attached via cable using it's default IP and I tried to give it an IP, subnet and DNS consistent with my router and I haven't been able to bring up the logon screen so that I can access the advanced settings. Until then, this things useless.

May be you should try the Opposite approach.

I.e. leave the AP with its default IP and change the maim Router Core IP to match the subnet of the AP.
