The police squad in the wire never really got much done ...pretty much the only guy they ever caught was Avon Barksdale and some of his cohorts. Didn't catch the Greek and his right hand man, didn't catch Stringer Bell (though they almost did), didn't catch Marlo. They didn't exactly get much done with all the work they put in. I thought season 5 was somewhat disappointing but still good. Kinda seemed like they bought the Greek back to the series so they could get another shot at catching him but it never happened. I would have liked to see them go in the direction of chasing and catching The Greek and Marlo instead of the whole homeless serial killer farce. All the detectives always just catch shit from their bosses and the mayor and all that every season, their cases always get shit on. It would have been cool to see them in full force with a fully funded unit for one season to go after Marlo and the Greek.

Omar comin!

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit

why would they need to catch a dead man?

I have owned the entire Wire for a couple of years and never seem to sit down and plow through it. I watched the first few eps and it didn't really grab me. I know it deserves the attention - many people I deeply respect just love it - so I need to try again one of these days.

For me it's hard to say whether I find the Sopranos or Mad Men the most satisfying hourlong drama (since I haven't really watched most of the Wire yet). I quite like Breaking Bad as well, particularly the second season. I have tried watching the Shield and it just felt too over-the-top to be truly compelling to me. I like Dexter but it's very much a genre show and often (particularly this season) doesn't really transcend its genre. I like it but don't consider it great. Haven't really watched Six Feet Under or Big Love so don't know how they fit into this discussion.

The police squad in the wire never really got much done ...

That was sort of the point. A few cops against thousands of criminals have no chance of ever winning. Being hamstrung by politics and corrupt leaders makes it worse. And when a criminal does go down, another jumps right in whether it's at the street level or at the top. This point was especially driven home in Season 4 with the school kids.

"McNulty, you're a piece of work."

the wire kicked ass. Don Vito: I found the same thing... I watched the first 3 eps and I was starting to wonder when things would ramp up.

i know Rome and Band of Brothers don't really count as the same type of genre because they were miniseries (or at least BOB was - btw RIP to the IRL Sergeant Winters) ... but they are right up there with The Wire for me. Breaking Bad is just phenomenal... that would be my #1 and the rest would fall in there somewhere... never watched the Sopranos :/

Another interesting thing about the wire is McNulty, Stringer Bell, and Mayor Carcetti in real life are all from across the pond. All faking American Accents. Impressive acting

Yeah I suppose.

I'm watching it again for the 3rd time within a year. Usually I watch it once a year. Such a great show. On Season 4.

Well I liked it a lot but don't think I'll ever watch it again, not for like 30+ years at least. I'm not one of those DVD collecting folk. Though I do watch cartoon re-runs a lot though so not much different I guess :x
