HBO's original: Silicon Valley... Liking it so far! 'Nerdy entourage'

It came on after GoT, so we just left it on.

The show is refreshing. It's a satire of the whole Silicon Valley start-up culture- pretty cubicles, rockclimbing in the office, 'revolutionary' founders, etc.

The main character is a yet another socially awkward coder who's trying to make it big with his own code innovation or app.

He came up with a great compression algorithm and suddenly got offered 10 mil by his current company or 200K for 5% by someone else. And the show is going from here.

I like it. It's not pandering to the nerds, but intelligently make fun of them.

HBO didn't pimp this show very much, or at all. I hadn't even heard about it until I saw the first snippet of it after GoT, then I set it to record. Smart and funny about geeks without going for the low-hanging fruit like BBT. Hopefully there are enough people that get the references and support it so it runs for a while.

I enjoyed it, and I watched it with some friends who were much more into GoT than silicon valley politics and they thought it was hilarious. Between GoT, this and Veep, HBO is killing Sunday night television.

Watched the first episode and set the DVR to pick up the rest of the season (like I'd miss it anyway in that time slot...) I liked it, although the first episode was pretty predictable. Being that Mike Judge is doing it, I'm sure I'll enjoy it and it will be good enough to continue to watch.


And brogrammer. I have had a few coworkers that come to mind. They are the typical jocks, not incredibly good at coding, but superior to us "lesser" alphas at sports. "You can beat me at basketball... Wow, that's great."

The only T&A any of the characters would see is in the fantasy role play, nerd porn they watch. At least, until they have a multi billion dollar company.

Eh, I'm on the fence about it, and as a developer, that disappoints me. The main character plays the usual, one-dimensional nerdy stereotype, which just makes him uninteresting. It certainly doesn't help that none of the other characters are all that interesting. They're just a slightly less socially awkward version of the main character, but they made one of them Indian and the other an atheist, because that's "edgy".

It is definitely not a nerdy Entourage. At this point, I'd rather watch Entourage again (or at least the first few seasons) than this show. At least Entourage has Ari Gold.

This is only a 30 minute show and they had to set up with main story (developer with no real life experience comes up with something he has no real idea of the value and gets bombarded with offers).

I get that there has to be setup, but that isn't really an excuse for the show to be rather dull. The thing is... it isn't really the setting that's bad... it's the characters. I can't even remember a single name, because I just don't give a shit about them. It's like I'm watching a house full of scrawny Miltons except no one ever inquires about their stapler! :| Maybe this is an example where a little exposition could have gone a long way.

Honestly, talking about the algorithm was probably the best part of the show, because at least then, I was able to nerd out a little bit.

Yeah... the girl from Sex Drive. I actually didn't even recognize her until she was talking to the main character outside the TED Talk. They ought to get the womanizer (Clark Duke) from Sex Drive as well. Amusingly enough, he's actually playing a programmer on Two and a Half Men right now.

Pleasantly surprised by it. Was a good episode, but then Mike Judge has been great at this type of satire.

The show really seems to capture the self-important douchebaggery of those people that live out here.

These guys portray unimportant and socially inept geeks. They aren't supposed to be memorable. So if you can't remember a single name they seem to have done their job.

What's important is that this series has some decent writing and those writers should be able to flesh out those characters with a bit of time. If the writing sucked it wouldn't matter how memorable the characters in the first 30 minute debut episode were.

I've always enjoyed Mike Judge's sarcastic, non-obvious humor and this is no exception. If you loved his prior works like Idiocracy and office space then you will love this. A solid 8.5/10 imo.
