HBO's True Detective Season 2 - let's discuss!

I loved the first season and I liked the format change with new focus characters and settings. Anyone here watch it last night? I thought it was a good episode, particularly the parts from Colin Farrell's point of view, and there was an interesting dynamic between him and Vaughn. I also think that Rachel McAdam's' and Taylor Kitsch's characters have a major intertwining plot-point that will get fleshed out at some point.

first season was super overrated. show was boring as shit for the most part and so anticlimatic. i tried to binge watch it but was having trouble staying awake for 2 episodes in a row. ill probably catch s2 when it's finished airing.

I agree that the first season was overrated, but I still enjoyed it for the most part.

I think the first episode of season 2 was disappointing. I know it takes time to set up the characters and storylines, but this is an 8 episode show. Hopefully episode 2 dials up the crazy. I'm not sure that anyone this season will be as memorable as Woody and Matthew. I think I enjoyed the rural setting much more than California as well.

Undoubtedly, the Season 2 can't match the class of Season 1. Why? Because people frigging miss Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and no characters to level them up are present in Season 1.

Also, dayum, the Intro song? Will never even come near Season 1's "Handsome Family's" track.

I didn't like the opening at all either

but I actually might give vince some time. there were a few really bad lines from him, but some of it was restrained and pretty decent. i'll give him a chance

The only three things I can remember from S1 of that show:

1.) The incredible tits lady (Daddario) that Woody was unrealistically banging (i.e. way above that character's pay grade).

2.) Matthew escaping from the gang, house to house (more shows should do that type of scene as it creates lots of tension living thru the minute-by-minute).

3.) The birds doing that circular thing that had viewers question whether this was a supernatural show....and turned out it was just the Director fucking with the audience.

S2E1 was poorly told (i.e. timeline, exposition, narrative, etc). Neither my wife or I could put it all together from one viewing. My wife gave up on this season after 30 minutes of viewing Ep.1......for the same reasons every critic is currently hating on this episode/season.

I'll stick thru this show, though, as I have to make my HBO subscription pay off.

everyone is talking about how it's so confusing.

sure, there's a lot going on, but the basics are simple. there's a big real estate deal going down between some some bad guys trying to go legit. one of the players has gone missing and it's tying together all the lead characters.

I don't really understand how the young cop fits in, but the rest was more or less straightforward. I suspect it will get a lot darker and more interesting as we go on. I'm not gonna let the reviews bother me yet

Thought it was decent. I could watch it without rolling my eyes or thinking anything was overly contrived.

Problem is everything to follow the first season will be compared to it and the actors in the first season are just plain better than this current group. We don't really know where the story will take this season yet, but I also think the setting of the first season really lent its self to setting the mood of every episode. The whole backwoods bayou thing with the most fringe and bizarre elements of society was pretty creepy.

The pilot for season two wasnt very good. All the cops are too broken, and it seems unnecessary to have 3 cops from 3 different departments involved. The only thing I kinda liked was Farrell beating up the bully's father, but he took it too far by using brass knuckles. And if he's the kinda guy who would beat up the bully's father like that, why would he continue to work for V Vaughn when it should be obvious by now he lied about his wifes rapist. Seems like his character would have killed him over that.

Since I'm paying for HBO I'll continue to watch it to get my money's worth, but its nothing special so far.

I think his wife and his right hand man might be related, and the right hand man raped his wife. Its hard to tell if he is a red head, but it kinda looks like it. EDIT: Looking at his IMDB photo, he is clearly a red head. And for some reason the actor in real life looks more like a scum bag than he does on the show, so he definitely did it!

Not sure I like Vaughn's character's diction, or maybe it's the way he delivers the lines. Sounds forced. I don't think the acting class this season will be able to match Harrelson and McConaughey in general, but I'll certainly give it more than one episode.

I'm holding judgement. E1 was all over the place while it was bringing the characters together. Not a fan of Vaughn in this. I'm really just going to judge it from E2 forward.

I did think S1 was overrated, but it was still very good. More straight forward climax than I expected. Great cinematography though, but that loses its luster going forward in S2. I just don't see any of these characters bringing what Woody brought to the show though.

I need to watch it again. It was terribly disjointed as far as story line goes, although they did sort of tie some things together at the very, very end.

I didn't realize this was an anthology type of show so I was expecting Woody and alright, alright alright to come back for this season. Oh well.

I liked the first episode of this season but you have to wonder about some of the character names. Det. Velcro? Yeah, I know it's supposed to be Velcoro but they couldn't really call him velcro and get away with it. And what about Caspere - as in the friendly ghost? That was just hilarious especially since he's dead in his first "appearance."

It looks like it could be really good but the main characters are just so broken you feel like they should be under observation rather than out in the field. We don't know Teague's problem yet but anyone who says 'if I die, burn all my shit' has got to have some skeletons in his play room. Semyon seems to have never met a narcotic he didn't like. At least we have some idea of what his demons are though. Rachel McAdams' character seems to have some serious daddy issues as well as a penchant for games of chance.

All of these people are train wrecks waiting to happen. So I'm thinking that this will be a lot like watching NASCAR - wondering who is going to crash and burn first.

I thought it was ok, as far as starting the story goes. I'm sure, if the season turns out to be enjoyable, I will be watching it again wondering how I missed several obvious hints about future plot points.
