It's quite clear how AMD is doing this. They're slowing working their way down the market, trying to maximize their profit while they have the opportunity to do so. They have, probably, at least a few months of that still to go.
As LOL_Wut_Axel said, nothing tangible about Kepler has been shown or leak in any way, which usually is a pretty good indicator of progress.
People complaining about the price: don't buy it if you don't want to! You can complain, but it really won't change much. AMD is doing business, and they're doing it right (for them, that is). Some of you seem to think that "omg it hasn't sold out in a day, it's a failure". I hope you realize that if the cards are kept at that price, they're actually selling? There's nothing stopping them from adjusting the price down if need be (assuming of course they're not THAT tight in profit margin, but that's unlikely). Also, bundling Dirt 3 doesn't count as an "oh shit" tactic.
A good next move for us consumers on AMD's part would be to release the 1.5GB version of the 7950, which would probably bring near identical performance at resolutions of 1200p and under. I'm unsure how much exactly that would cut the price, but at something like $400 to $450, that'd sell a lot.
Personally I'm waiting to see what happens next, as anyone should really.
