Throw in 9999 as quantity on Newegg, for example, and it will cut it down to the maximum number you can order, which is usually would probably be the stock level.

All the 7950s on Newegg have a limit of 2 per customer. Probably to cut back on reselling on Ebay and such...

But I never thought of doing this, pretty clever. Although not sure just how accurate it is.

Yep, still trying to deflect. You're not worth the time it takes for me to write a reply to your non-arguments pulled out of thin air, so don't bother. Goodbye.

Hmmmm, I'm just curious could you spell out your logic on what I am deflecting?

Keep in mind that the GTX 580 is a year old atleast, I really doubt that a new card from Nvidia is going to be slower than the 580...The only way for Nvidia to go is UP. And the 7970 at the moment is at best 25% faster in *some* games...Its very easy to see that Nvidia has the potential to put out a card that is faster than the 7970. Especially since they are on the 28nm fab now.

I have a 580 and a 7970 btw...Im happy with both. But I expect Nvidia will have a faster card than the 7970 with its Gtx 680. Im also sure that they will charge a arm and a leg for it to - just as AMD is doing now the 7970. But the Gtx 680 *will* be faster [just wait and see].

Honestly i cannot justify paying $450 for that kind of performance, even if its got good OC headroom. Next gen at these prices should obliterate previous gen, otherwise it shouldn't be priced so high.

The 7950 should have been targeted at $400, with the 1.5gb version $350. They are being way too greedy and i'm not buying it.

It's a sad shame NV isn't bringing anything to the table sooner allowing these high prices to stick.

It's quite clear how AMD is doing this. They're slowing working their way down the market, trying to maximize their profit while they have the opportunity to do so. They have, probably, at least a few months of that still to go.

As LOL_Wut_Axel said, nothing tangible about Kepler has been shown or leak in any way, which usually is a pretty good indicator of progress.

People complaining about the price: don't buy it if you don't want to! You can complain, but it really won't change much. AMD is doing business, and they're doing it right (for them, that is). Some of you seem to think that "omg it hasn't sold out in a day, it's a failure". I hope you realize that if the cards are kept at that price, they're actually selling? There's nothing stopping them from adjusting the price down if need be (assuming of course they're not THAT tight in profit margin, but that's unlikely). Also, bundling Dirt 3 doesn't count as an "oh shit" tactic.

A good next move for us consumers on AMD's part would be to release the 1.5GB version of the 7950, which would probably bring near identical performance at resolutions of 1200p and under. I'm unsure how much exactly that would cut the price, but at something like $400 to $450, that'd sell a lot.

Personally I'm waiting to see what happens next, as anyone should really.

Well, the price is too high. I could have had this performance a year ago for a similar price. Plus, my SLI 460s already perform extremely well.

Of course, you're correct in saying that AMD is doing business in a manner correct for them. They have no current gen competition from Nvidia at this stage and their 7950 beats the 580 for the most part. So they've priced it accordingly. Of course, when Nvidia hits with their Kepler GPUs, I'm sure the 7950 will take a sudden nosedive in price - and in my opinion, suddenly become the best value on the market.

We shall see.

Already been discussed back and forth. When Kepler launches sometime this year, AMD will have the HD 8000 series ready.

I never expect that to come from you and I agree. I dont understand why some of you defend a company so much. Its not about being Nvidia fan or bashing AMD. We as consumers love it when both companies slug it out and put up a good fight. It really does not matter which side wins. The reason why everyone is dissapointed is AMD is giving its competition a scratch on the back instead of a kick to the balls. We all know how this will pan out. Nvidia will return the good favor by releasing parts that that slot in between the the AMD ones on performance and price avoiding direct competition.

The thing about the 7970 is that anyone who buys it is probablly 'in the know'. Just like the GTX460, it begs to be overclocked. Once the clocks are cranked on the 7970, it's no contest. I think AMD released the 925MHz part now because it was fast enough to overtake the GTX580. They'll have a higher clocked and tweaked part coming for Keplar.. I have nothing to back that up, it's just a hunch.

I don't care what brand it is, as long as its the best perf/$ and perf/w.

It just so happens AMD is in the lead ATM, but seriously, they are going overboard with their pricing on the 2nd tier card. It's fine that can price the 7970 for $550, that's the premium one pays for halo parts.. but $450 for a 7950, balls.

As a consumer it pisses me off, but as a businessman I'm proud of AMD that they finally started pricing their video cards with some degree of sense. Of course, I'm also not looking for anything in the near future, and this ridiculous pricing helps me to validate my gtx 480 purchase a few months back, so, um, ...

Some are saying they're selling like hot cakes, others are saying they are not. Does anyone really know though?

Now $10 price drop on reference sapphire 7950 on top of free shipping and game. Wow. All still in stock except for ref asus card. They really missed the mark on this one. I hope amd has a long successful future in the gpu industry but it's kinda funny to see the 7950 launch go over so badly.

With the 7950 AMD can deliver performance similar to if not better than the GTX 580 while consuming significantly less power and enjoying all the temperature & noise benefits that provides, making it a very attractive card.
Anandtech
Any way you slice it, the Radeon HD 7950 does what it set out to do: undercut the GeForce GTX 580 in price while trumping it in performance. Since the 7950's power consumption is ridiculously, remarkably lower than the GTX 580's, there's little left to do but declare the 7950 the clear winner. That's before one even figures in the new bells and whistles built into the Tahiti GPU, including a hardware H.264 video encoding engine and support for PCI Express 3.0, neither of which the GTX 580 can match.
The Tech Report

umm....yes..it's obviously a real bad launch...

Well, HardOCP gave it a silver medal instead of gold because of the price. They thought 399 was more appropriate. It just depends on the review and what you want to quote.

The true story is how are 7970's still selling? Most people will see the $480 price tag of the 7950 and then just buy a 7970 for the extra money.
